WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) A Kansas mother is raising concern about schools being able to provide an adequate lunch to students.
Rachel Green posted a photo of her daughter's school lunch at Hutchinson High School to Facebook on Wednesday.
She said her daughter had the last lunch rotation of the day and all that was left was a "nasty, discolored hot dog, a round bun (because they had run out of hot dogs buns) and beans."
Green said she couldn't believe she had been charged $2.70 for the meal that didn't include fries or veggies.
Eyewitness News reached out to the Hutchinson School District who said the principal had made contact with Green about the lunch and refunded her daughter's account.

The Republican plan in action

(7,300 posts)Treat America. Aramark and others over charge our school districts and make a profit by under serving our children, underpaying their employees and buying the cheapest crap Sysco has to offer all with the full support of GOPee dominated school boards and brain washed rubes.
$2.70 for a hot dog. Children. Our most important resource, my ass.

and the server put our portion on the tray.

(15,805 posts)to screw them over and cut funding for education that will result in a generation of Kansas citizens who are unlikely to rise about minimum wage jobs and remained locked in poverty. Smart.

(29,674 posts)Since it was a hot dog school lunch usually includes fries, veggies and fruit with that meal.

(25,862 posts)The meals are either cooked at a central kitchen and delivered, or they buy pre-made, typically frozen stuff that's heated at the school.
In reality it would be vastly cheaper to cook at the school but the false economy mentality of outsourcing everything has taken over everywhere.

(29,674 posts)Because they would need to hire actual cooks, at a decent wage with full time hours and benefits.
(I know this from experience. I was a cafeteria supervisor and watched how,as each lunch lady retired they refused to hire anyone in her place. This was one of the big three, btw. It's how they all do business. )

(16,319 posts)Three meal per day for about 1200 kids were prepared by the staff and kids. Some of the meals were really good, like the baked chicken and the breakfasts. I think the average meal cost less than a dollar.

(25,862 posts)I help prepare and serve meals. Cooking from scratch is remarkably inexpensive. Plus, I've learned to prepare mass quantities. Oh, and for those who might want to know, Sam's Club is rarely the least expensive source for food.
And yeah, the per-meal cost isn't that high, but it seems like a lot when one person undertakes to fix a main dish for 80 people. I did once did spaghetti for 150, and because I made the sauce it simply didn't cost much. Including the ground meat I think I spent 50 or 60 dollars.

(36,478 posts)I'm not kidding. WTF? How many martini lunches, do you think our reps & senators are treated to, so they can give those very same contributors big sloppy Christmas tax cut, but we can't give every kid two free meals a day? And a big segment of our population claims we are a Christian nation?

(13,081 posts)Weve been doing this to our underfunded students (worst in the nation in funding) for decades. Pizza and tater tots is on the menu literally daily.
The Department of Agriculture reimburses the same no matter what the school pays for the meal. So if the school can meet the minimal nutrition requirements for $.35 and then charge $2.70, its a profit of $2.35 per lunch.
Capitalism! Hip hip, hooray!
