Orlando motorcyclist killed in hit-and-run with other bike in Lake County
One person is dead after troopers say someone hit the victim's motorcycle with their bike then left the scene near the intersection of County Road 48 and Royal Palm Drive in Lake County.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say the hit-and-run driver's motorcycle may be aHarley-Davidson Soft Tail Classic, either burnt orange or maroon. The bike likely has damage to the sides, and the driver should have scrapes on his arms and back. The driver was wearing a black helmet.
The name of the victim was not released late Saturday because next of kin had not been notified. He was described as a 54-year-old man from Orlando who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Troopers said the two motorcycles were traveling side by side in the westbound lane of C.R. 48 east of U.S. Highway 27 when the Harley-Davidson struck the side of the victim's motorcycle. Both riders lost control. The hit-and-run driver laid the bike down after the collision and it then struck the end of a guard rail then a road sign.

(5,756 posts)Taught us you don't ride side by side. You stagger yourselves in the lane. Probably so you can see a bike just ahead of you have issues and be able to divert around someone who lays down their bike.
Only professionals like a Prez. escort should ride side by side.

(9,681 posts)back in '84. They were behind a vehicle and hubby was on outside, the other bike decided to pass and when he did he clipped hubby's front tire. Hubby it road sign (took it off about knee height) slid down the road and ended up in a ditch. Bike ended up in several pieces. He is fine today but still has a bum knee from taking off the road sign.

(60,212 posts)I've always been freaked out by motorcycles, but I saw an accident a few weeks ago that really put the fear of God into me.
Long story short, motorcycles can't go from 50 to 0 anywhere near as quickly as passenger cars can.
The dude in the accident was wearing a helmet, but he had a serious concussion. He apparently needed surgery to fix a broken leg too.
If he hadn't been wearing a helmet he would have died, and it would have been a horrible death.
