Sandy Hook day. And the last five minutes of those children's lives

1. tight chest, brimming eyelids... It hurts so much to think that those children died in vain...

No change to prevent other attacks and bring solace to those parents. No. They just get to have death threats and accusations that their loss is "made up" from the RW conspiracy cretins.

Their pain has been compounded infinitely.

2. I don't know if there was ever a news story that bothered me more than Sandy Hook.

Not even 9-11.

Part of it was the horror that was inflicted on the victims.

Part of it was the callous, absolutely ass-backward response by many gun enthusiasts to immediately run to gun shops and gun shows to stock up on more AR-15s.

3. I can't think about it without getting angry as well as sad

Angry at the NRA, at Alex Jones (who is as evil as the shooter was) and at the politicians who stood by and allowed for the weapons that became the Las Vegas shooting. Who could possibly think we are better off with all these guns?

4. It'll be just another day at the range or fondling their lethal weapons for most gun-lovers.

5. As many of you know, my workplace was directly affected by this tragedy.

More than half of my co-workers are absent today. I decided to come to work as a welcome distraction. However, I expect to spend at least part of the day at my desk crying. Those colleagues who're here today will probably collect in the break room for a moment of silence and remembrance.

For us, it sucks every single day, not just December 14. Every day we interact with our co-worker who has to go on with his life. Every day is a little heartbreak. When he is absent from the office, it's often because he cannot face the overwhelming grief day in and day out. And often it is because he is doing advocacy work, which will go on for the rest of his life.

I can't think about those five minutes. It would overwhelm me with grief, rage, and pain. So I'll spend some time today being kinder to people. I'll hug the people who want hugging.

I'll remember how much the 26 are still loved by so many.

7. I live about 20 miles away

and I'll never forget the day. I just finished presenting to a big department meeting and when I got back to my chair a colleague told me there was a school shooting in CT. It was far worse than anything I thought of.

8. Ive never thought about it that way.

I think about the innocence and beauty of that age, about lives cut short so young, about grieving parents, and about the pain.

But the idea that they suffered with the terror and horror of seeing other children shot before their eyes? Scared and alone without even their parents to comfort them? Oh my god, how horrible.
