Seems to me the Jones campaign thought it was a bad idea for outsiders, especially northern liberals, to be seen as meddling. In addition, Jones declined to go to Washington for a fund raiser, for just this reason.

An Alabama Senate Candidate Keeps Democratic Leaders Away — but Not Their Money

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/14/us/politics/alabama-doug-jones-roy-moore-democrats.html

National Democratic groups have not spent a dollar on their own television or radio commercials promoting Mr. Jones, a former federal prosecutor. The party’s most popular campaigners, such as former President Barack Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, have not set foot in the state.

...

“It’s an Alabama race,” Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, said at a news conference on Monday, repeating the phrase three times for emphasis. ... as Mr. Schumer demonstrated, they are acutely aware of the risk of being seen as orchestrating the race from afar.

...

And far from being shunned by the party, Mr. Jones’s top advisers have been open about which direction the shunning is going.

“Stay home, this is our race and we’ll decide it here,” said Giles Perkins, a former Alabama Democratic Party chairman and one of Mr. Jones’s strategists.

...

Mr. Jones decided not to travel to Washington on Tuesday night for a $500 per-person cocktail party fund-raiser headlined by such Democratic luminaries as Senator Kamala Harris and Eric H. Holder Jr., the former attorney general, because he saw no reason to do anything that could let Republicans redirect the focus of the campaign from Mr. Moore.

It could be that B Sanders and others were working behind the scenes.

Bernie Sanders, Randall Woodfin may aid Doug Jones in Senate campaign

http://www.alreporter.com/2017/10/26/reports-bernie-sanders-woodfin-troops-may-coming-aid-jones-senate-campaign/

Wednesday, October 17, The New York Times reported that “national leaders, including Senators Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders, have appealed to Mr. (Randall) Woodfin to deploy his field organization to help Mr. Jones in the Special Election for the Senate.”

101. Ironically there was a Bernie involved in the Moore/Jones race
Wed Dec 13, 2017, 11:32 PM
Dec 2017

The fictional reporter Bernie Bernstein was calling folks to inquire about paying women cold cash if they would say they were abused by Moore. Why? It was a dirty trick by the Moore campaign/GOP fellow travelers to discredit the accusers and stir up antisemitic sentiment.
It probably won Moore a few votes as well.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/bernie-bernstein-is-mad-as-hell-and-will-accept-obscurity-no-more/2017/11/15/35df66c8-ca4e-11e7-8321-481fd63f174d_story.html

"After years of toiling in obscurity, Bernie gained national attention Tuesday when an Alabama pastor shared with a local TV station a voice mail left by Bernie. “Hi, this is Bernie Bernstein. I’m a reporter for The Washington Post calling to find out if anyone at this address is a female between the ages of 54 to 57 years old willing to make damaging remarks about candidate Roy Moore for a reward of between $5,000 and $7,000,” it said. “We will not be fully investigating these claims. However, we will make a written report.”

This produced a rather harsh response from Marty Baron, The Post’s executive editor, about the person “falsely claiming to be from The Washington Post. The call’s description of our reporting methods bears no relationship to reality. We are shocked and appalled that anyone would stoop to this level to discredit real journalism.” A Post article about the episode piled on, alleging that “there are no Washington Post reporters or editors named Bernie Bernstein,” and a Post spokeswoman dutifully explained that there is “an explicit policy that prohibits paying sources.”
