for healthcare, living wage, etc. He also has to be somewhat conciliatory to the deplorables in the state, with emphasis on "somewhat."

This is a very different time from when Shelby switched parties. This was the first time I listened to Jones and he didn't come across that he would switch.

He is unlikely to be reelected if there is any Republican other than Moore in the next election. He may vote conservative in some matters to try an keep his job.

I see this as a moral victory. The alt-right, neo-nationalists, and Steve Bannon have been slapped and they are already blaming the "establishment" Republicans; chaos is likely to ensue on the right and this could debilitate the Republicans in 2018.

He has also mentioned former AL Senator Howell Heflin as an influence.

I think a look back at Heflin, who I remember contemporaneously, might be helpful. You'll see what a conservative Southern Democrat thinks about things. For what its worth, I think Jones may be a bit more liberal than was Heflin.

Here is his Wiki page, which, at a casual read, seems a good summary of the man.

Seriously, the guy hasn't even been sworn in yet and you're writing him off. Just enjoy the win. Even if just today.

is better than Roy Moore. Moore aka Pedophile is the definition of deplorable, and is completely and utterly unfit to serve in the US Senate.

In some places, like California, he would qualify as a Republican.
