I can't find the NAFTA thread I just saw...

Anyway, We can not get rid of NAFTA. I mean, some parts of the same car are made in USA some Mexico and some Canada... NAFTA is not only an economic issue. It's also a global strategic issue. This is bad for the USA. It just isolates us more and there is no reason for it. We do not have an unemployment problem in USA, we have a wage problem. Can someone help me understand the logic in this? All I was able to read is " some on the left want to get rid of NAFTA. Who? Geez.. seems to me we are just going to get left out of the world economy, the world will go on without us at the table.

It was originally negotiated with corporate lobbyists

That American First attitude appeals to some folks, but we don't own the world despite what some folks think.

I really do not think this end of NAFTA is very popular with most Americans. The people for this must not understand strategic alliance.

9. Look back at posts during the primaries. This topic and the TPP got very ugly. If you supported

trade and alliances, you were branded a corporatist and much worse. Obama was bashed repeatedly for doing what I felt was exactly the right thing regarding the pacific agreement. It was really ugly.

I agree 100%, when the world does well, so do we.

Pulling out of TPP just helps China and leaves us out of the global economy.

though, because most of us have pretty much the same goals, with just a few disagreements.

The job loss in USA had some to do with NAFTA but mostly innovation. The USA does well when the whole world does well. This whole thing just saddens me.

and the environment - as exist in the EU.

You are right that global engagement - including trade, immigration, diplomacy, etc - are better for global peace and prosperity in the long run than MAGA isolationism.

However, as liberals we should not support conservative trade agreements that are used to undercut labor, the environment and reguations. Something tells me that Trump is not going to champion labor rights, the environment or corporate regulation/taxation in any trade (re)negotiations. If NAFTA is renegotiated by him, it will probably go from bad to worse.

TPP may have been a step closer to what Europe has (which is why conservatives in the UK want our of the EU). NAFTA is far from that.

I just worry about the damage of dismantling the whole thing. I think it's too late to re negotiate NAFTA and I was for TPP. I thought it was a good idea to have alliance with Southeast Asia. It would have given us allies against China an0d Russia.
