(7,522 posts)The quote has a complicated history. Obama used it a lot. This from Slate:

(54,256 posts)I'm an old Alabama white man.
We've been through some shit, haven't we?

(54,256 posts)Born in Montgomery, grew up in Birmingham in the bad ol' 40s, 50s and 60s.
Left for several years.
I'm now 76 and in Foley.

(6,537 posts)Raised in Chicago but came back when my dad was dying. I now live in West Blocton, gateway to Centreville! My family, going back before the Civil War, came from around the Tuscaloosa area. I worked with a woman whose Dad was a cop under Bull Conner. She told me stories that curled my otherwise straight hair, but now she's a liberal Dem. I'm 66 and still can't believe how stubborn, yet awesome my fellow Alabamians can be.

(54,256 posts)And I do believe that I remember that he had a very low opinion of black folks.
What a putz.
My friend says they had a huge picture of ole Bull hanging up right in the parlor!

(16,927 posts)and knowing the true story, I'm still in shock that IQ45 was SO stupid as to state on one of his "shi**er tweets" that Senator-elect Jones was "soft on crime!
I SO hope that Senator-elect Jones is a royal PAIN-IN-THE-ASS to IQ45 up to the time that MAGA (Mueller Ain't Going Away) crashes down on the entire crooked family!

(12,448 posts)I was glued to the TV last night watching Rachel and Lawrence (with Joy) and I choked up as I saw Alabama telling the world that they reject bigotry, homophobia, and misogyny (not to mention pedophilia!). As Doug Jones tweeted:
Thank you ALABAMA!
charlyvi
(6,537 posts)I must say, we aren't used to people thanking us. It's a good feeling!

(12,448 posts)It was in 1966 and it was a HUGE culture shock! There were racists there, true, but I found some good, kind people there also. A couple of them are still my long distance friends. Alabama has a bad rep, some of it deserved, but we shouldn't forget there is lots of good there too. You guys proved it last night. Congratulations!

(6,537 posts)When I came down here I was amazed by how frustrating, yet kind-hearted, most Alabamians are. It's like that are one way in the abstract, yet another way face to face. Funny as hell too.
Congratulations, Alabama!

(31,112 posts)the horrible excuse for a human being.
His opponent dared prosecute white people for killing black people.

(41,984 posts)Their reasons are mostly unfathomable to liberals but if you think they voted against Jones because he prosecuted those girls killers you misread everything about Alabama. The people who turned out were either party blind or believe a lot of what Moore said, that abortion, gay marriage, gender equality, immigration, etc. should be illegal and the world should be some fantasy theyve convinced themselves it would be if only everyone lived like they want them to. Theyre afraid of their own increasing powerlessness and the irrelevance of their thinking. Its not a blanket desire for people to die. Its a desire for them to stop being something their lives and their religion has convinced them will make all the things theyve thought would save them go away.

(6,537 posts)The people of Alabama are complex. Most people don't realize that.
