It was in 1966 and it was a HUGE culture shock! There were racists there, true, but I found some good, kind people there also. A couple of them are still my long distance friends. Their reasons are mostly unfathomable to liberals but if you think they voted against Jones because he prosecuted those girls’ killers you misread everything about Alabama. The people who turned out were either party blind or believe a lot of what Moore said, that abortion, gay marriage, gender equality, immigration, etc. should be illegal and the world should be some fantasy they’ve convinced themselves it would be if only everyone lived like they want them to. They’re afraid of their own increasing powerlessness and the irrelevance of their thinking. It’s not a blanket desire for people to die. It’s a desire for them to stop being something their lives and their religion has convinced them will make all the things they’ve thought would save them go away.
