Beto O'Rourke is running against Ted Cruz and there are a TON of volunteer opportunities you can do to help flip this vote via the comfort of your own computer.
Any DUer's that can donate or volunteer your time to help flip this seat and kick out Ted Cruz would be a huge help.

(938 posts)Already donated and will continue. We aren't so much a red state as a non-voting state. Because the authoritarian GOPers always show up every election, they win disproportionately. GOTV is by FAR the most important thing we can do apart from fielding quality candidates like Beto.
I was demoralized by Wendy Davis' huge defeat, even among women voters, but I sense new energy among Democrats. My local Democratic party (in a very red and largely rural county) is very close to having candidates for every contested county race in 2018, the first time in years.
I'm not under any illusion that Texas will suddenly become blue, but we are starting to get traction we haven't seen in a LONG time around here.

(54,387 posts)Cruz probably thinks he's got nothing to worry about. Just like Roy Moore did.
Sing along: Ted Cruz, we don't buy you (to the tune of Blue Bayou):

(82,849 posts)Like Doug Jones in Alabama, Beto O'Rourke is a fine public servant with a record of good work for his constituents. I suppose Ted Cruz will dismiss O'Rourke for attending one of the lesser Ivies (Columbia), but O'Rourke can kick Cruz's ass all the way up the Red River and down the Rio Grande.
This is not a seat the Republicans thought they'd have to defend back in 2016, but it looks like they're going to have to sink some resources into it if they want to hold it in 2018. Texas is a far larger and more expensive media market than Alabama, and O'Rourke is going to need some scratch. Send him $10 if it's in your budget.

(145,274 posts)He is a nice guy. Beto is not taking super pac money but some of the major Democratic fundraisers are getting behind him and that could help. I have been invited to a couple of high dollar fundraisers for him but have not yet committed to him. Texas is an expensive state to run in and Beto will need to raise some real money to be viable.
Carnival Cruz is really disliked by a good number of voters including many republicans. If this is a wave year, Beto may be viable.

(45,447 posts)Texas's demographics are even more favorable for us than Alabama. We need to fire up our base and earn their votes so they turn out big for Beto. Cruz has enemies within his own party.
Think of the tremendous diversity in Texas. We can do this.

How do you pronounce 'Beto'.?

(938 posts)'Bet' with a short e and o on the end. At least that's how he pronounces it on his town hall videos.

(54,256 posts)Is it a nickname?
Just curious.

(938 posts)His given name is Robert Francis O'Rourke. "He adopted the nickname of "Beto" (from Spanish "Roberto" )"
duh
Why didn't I think of wiki?
Chalk it up to old age.
Thanks.

Kudos a'plenty to the Alabama volunteers who got the vote out yesterday!

(145,274 posts)This makes me smile http://kut.org/post/theres-democrat-running-every-texas-congressional-seat-next-year
Mark Jones, political science fellow at Rice Universitys Baker Institute, says those filings set a record for the number of Democratic challengers in an era of Republican dominance, and are a departure from 2016 when eight Republican-held congressional seats went uncontested by Democrats.
We are seeing a groundswell of unusually high support and mobilization among progressive Democrats who are really angered by the Trump administration, Jones said.
But, Democrats arent just gunning for congressional seats. According to preliminary numbers from the Texas Democratic Party, Democrats are running in 89 percent of the seats in the Texas House and 88 percent of the seats in the Texas Senate. Both are the highest percentages the party has mustered since at least 1992.
There have been cycles where a number of congressional seats and large percentage of Texas state house seats were not contested.

(30,741 posts)We are seeing a large number of congressional candidates filing in Illinois, too. They are running in rural red districts where there is often no candidate. Even if we do not win everything, we will make those repiggies fight for their seats.
Local boards are being flipped, too. Democrats are winning where they have never won before. We are getting precinct committeemen in places where there have been vacancies always, in at least three counties that I know of.
We can't forget. GOTV.
