(13,305 posts)...nobody gets credit for that except Chris Christie. DNC wasn't really anywhere to be found. But the fact is that we could have run a moldy sandwich with a D after it's name and we would have won so it would have been silly for the party to put time, effort, or money into NJ. It was much better spent in VA where things were closer.

I've posted this more than once today - the DNC as well as the NAACP and local groups of residents who banded together all deserve massive amounts of credit for their work. Tom Perez & the DNC brought some of the stuff that was successful in Virginia down to Alabama and it helped a great deal.

Perez knows how to work with the AA community, a big part of the base, to get out the vote.
Also he didn't spend most of the funds on TV ads. He distributed much to local organizing groups who took it from there.
The TV ads he did spend on were very effect though.

Despite publicly remaining mum on the race, the Democratic National Committee spent nearly $1 million on the contest while dispatching and funding 30 aides here, a party official told POLITICO. That push came just as Jones sought to distance himself from the national party and win over conservatives.
It was a politically delicate move. Jones detractors have tried painting him as a tool of the national party, so Democrats in Washington have tried treading carefully in order to avoid leaving too much of a footprint in a state where Democrats havent won a Senate seat in over two decades. The effort paid off: Jones prevailed Tuesday.
But the DNC and other national Democrats have also come under fire from critics this year for their perceived lack of involvement in other special elections, so the committee has been eager to chip in.

what made this happen were large numbers of ground troops in the African American community who went door to door in their own neighborhoods to TGOTV. It was not organized by anyone other than themselves. As being reported on NPR, the local Democratic Party had no or scarce local organization.
The DNC did give lots of money for ads, it's true. But it was the African American effort, walking and walking door to door, that did it.
Like to give credit where credit is due.
Raster
(20,998 posts)... It was the African-American Community in Alabama, ESPECIALLY THE WOMEN of the African-American Community, that really came into play. They organized, went door-to-door, stood up in churches and in general, spoke out LOUD AND CLEAR against a vitriolic, racist, bigoted pervert. Sure, the DNC game money for ads and other support, but put credit where credit is due: Just as the African-American Community stood firm and steadfast against tRump*, they also did the same against Moore*.

(13,305 posts)....Our advertising strategies and our reliance on old forms of campaigning need to be shelved. Money should be get out the vote efforts.
I'll never forget the weekend before the 2016 election, being in my home state of New Jersey and seeing ad after ad after expensive ad being run on deep blue NY/NJ tv stations then going out to swing state PA and seeing nothing. The amount of money that was spent on those NY market media buys had to have been insane and were a colossal waste of money.
If we are going to continue relying on traditional advertising then it needs to be better managed. But overall we should be shifting money away from that and into ground game gotv efforts.

(9,865 posts)The Repugs apparently have run a ground game door to door for many election cycles.
The DNC must start funding these efforts for our troops. There was a dearth of this in 2016.
vi5
(13,305 posts)...but I think the one accurate criticism of Hillary was that she surrounded herself far too much with old-guard, old-media loyalists who were operating on one too many outdated assumptions about campaigning and where to spend money. I won't get into whether that was nefarious or naive (or maybe a combination of both) on her staff's part, but it was something we need to learn from and hopefully have at least based on the most recent elections..
vi5
(13,305 posts)I'm really curious how much the DNC was involved in the ground game.
I want to believe that we've turned the corner on spending insane amounts of money on well connected consultants and advertising agencies who do nothing but line their pockets while losing elections, and that we are now spending that money on get out the vote efforts as I've heard the DNC did in AL.
But I've seen no actual evidence other than some gloating threads giving all of the credit to the DNC. And maybe they did do what I hope they did.

(58,662 posts)BIRMINGHAM, Ala. With the spotlight squarely on Roy Moore in the closing weeks of Alabama's Senate special election, a constellation of Democratic groups embarked on an under-the-radar effort to organize voters for candidate Doug Jones.

That push came just as Jones sought to distance himself from the national party and win over conservatives.

(31,261 posts)In Virginia, in races in most of the country and now in Alabama. Perez organizes locals quietly. Yes, we lost some early races while he got settled in, but his leadership has been quiet and damned amazing. He stays, period. I am looking forward to more success from his leadership.

The folks who hate Perez are going to have to try harder. The results in Va. and Alabama are cutting into their narrative pretty badly.

(3,148 posts)What evidence do you have that Perez was the first Democrat to call for Franken to resign? I'd call this a lie but I don't know what you've seen that leads you to make this claim. it's interesting that Perez must step down. Yet you still display the avatar of Sanders who called for Franken to resign without due process.
It's still too early to say if Perez is right or wrong fit as DNC Chairman. There's been a lot of unexpected success under Perez's short term of service. Which makes me believes he's doing a good job.

btw, who benefits from this sort of thinking, finger-pointing and calls for resignation? Particularly for a DNC Chairman racking up remarkable successes. I was against the Franken pile-on/resignation but haven't seen anything indicating Perez the first one to step out and/or issue orders to the troops.
Can't we enjoy the Alabama moment for at least a short while???
