a handful have claimed. Yes it is probably true he will probably lose in 2020, but for at least 2 years he can serve as a bridge for us and vote against Trump's agenda. That is huge. The Senate map in 2018 is not great for us, but it is likely to be a wave year in our favor and there is a good chance we take back the house anyway. The Senate map in 2020 looks much better for us and if Trump is still President it is likely to be a wave year for us again. So we could probably absorb the loss of the Alabama Senate seat and be just fine in 2020. Of course we would prefer for Jones to be re-elected.

(12,157 posts)Just like that awful day in November I went to bed not knowing what was to come. This morning I woke up to find an not from my wife that Jones won! So my heart sang that old Democratic standby:
So long sad times
Go along bad times
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past
Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again
Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on...
Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!

(9,118 posts)The only difference is that even if Donald is forced to bow out before 2020, I still think that Democrats have a shot at rolling over the Republicans in 2020. Pence was not a popular governor, and his becoming vice president was a "golden parachute" from being governor of Indiana.

(2,785 posts)it will be Pence. I believe that if Trump doesn't resign or isn't impeached and removed he will be defeated in a primary by someone like Kasich. If we take back the house in 2018 I believe that is when you will see republicans in the house and Senate turn on Trump once they can no longer use him to pass legislation.

(15,286 posts)would Richard Shelby switch parties again like he did in 1994 after being elected as a Dem?
I think Doug Jones could be re-elected. Incumbency is powerful and Jones didn't run as someone he was not. If you look at all the Rs who didn't bother to vote, it tells me Jones' positions weren't so unpopular that they were motivated to get out and vote against him.

(2,785 posts)run as against someone accused of being a pedophile. Moore was so unpopular that republicans in Alabama were not motivated to go out and vote. As for Shelby I doubt it. Even in a wave year Alabama is an uphill climb for Democrats under normal circumstances.

(2,785 posts)re-elected, I don't think that is likely, but it is certainly possible.

(65,042 posts)Not picking on you, but this is the third time i've seen this here today. The election will be in November 2020. That's 35 months from now. And the seat is still occupied by the incumbent for at least another month.
So, this is a 3 year win, not a 2 year win.
Everything else you wrote, i agree totally.
