Doug Jones (D): 49.9
Roy Moore (R): 48.4
Write-in: 1.7
In other words, Roy Moore lost by 1.5 percent. For a Republican running statewide in Alabama, thats an ass-kicking for the ages.
But while any reasonable person would simply concede, its not surprising that a guy who doesnt believe in science would also struggle with math: Despite trailing by a margin of 20,715 votes, Moore wants a recount.
Hooo boy yeah thats just not gonna happen. I mean, it literally could happen: According to Republican Secretary of State (and zealous vote-suppressor) John Merrill, Moore is free to request a recount no matter how much he trails by as long as hes willing to pay. Of course, one of the many things Moore sucked at throughout his campaign was raising money. Can he really find enough willing dupes to finance some kind of WWII-Japanese-soldiers-not-surrendering-in-the-Filipine-jungle-for-decades kind of dead-ender gambit? Yeah, probably.

(26,264 posts)I understand there are necessary criteria that trigger automatic recounts, but this margin doesn't seem to hit the trigger point. So, if he wants one, I say he should have to pay for it.

(11,843 posts)If Moore, or more precisely, donors pay for the recount, it doesn't matter how much he lost by. Remember that Strange remains the Alabama senator until he is replaced. So there is going to be no hurry in the AL SOS office to proceed, expect a recount to be announced the week after Christmas, the recount and appeal could take a long time.
Recall that Al Franken was not certified after his first election until the end of June the next year... That's some fucking irony right there.

(46,117 posts)Don Siegelman won re-election when Republicans wanted a recount -- in secret -- of one county. The country originally went for Siegelman and flipped after the recount.
When Siegelman objected, that's when the shit hit the fan. Karl Rove took over.
The wife of Rove's good friend, Leura Canary filed charges against Siegelman for bribery. Those charges should have been dismissed as there were no facts of bribery, but they stuck. From Grand Jury to Jury to Appeal after Appeal, Siegelman lost and was imprisoned until a few months ago.

Roy Moore rode a horse called Sassy. Sassy was also a well-loved magazine for teen girls.

(5,914 posts)They probably had to shoot that poor horse with a tranquilizer gun, or Roy would still be riding across the South in a random direction.

(3,245 posts)and I don't expect that he will have the Republican party supporting this so he'll be on his own. Once he realized that the counties where he won, he won big. But those were his traditional base, the small rural counties where turnout was low. There aren't going to be enough votes out there to make a difference. The traditional Democratic strongholds (my opinion) turnout was alot higher than expected. Those are the majority African American communities and I had seen that the split was something like 96-4. The only way for that split to change would be by some external mechanism and listening to the reports coming out early in the returns, there wasn't much talk of anamolies coming from those districts.

but Strange is seated until the certification and at the earliest it wouldn't have been until the next session starts after the Christmas recess.
McConnell is just bs'ing.

(11,843 posts)I thought the Tax Bill had to pass before year end or it would need 60 votes.
If that is the case, then a recount isn't that much of a bargain. But if Turtle can drag the Tax Bill into January, having Strange and forcing out Franken while refusing to seat a replacement makes a recount seem cost effective.

(3,245 posts)I haven't been as versed as I would normally be over the last couple of years. If Reconciliation is used then the compromise bill would have to come back really quickly and as far as I know it's still in conference committee. It could happen.
