It may be half the time of a 6 year term....but its still 3 years...that is not a short period of time...

Usually a special election fills the seat for the remainder of the six year term.

3 years will get us to the 2020 presidential election and a great Dem candidate to win it and help re-elect Doug Jones.

Senate seats are set in Classes I, II, and III.

Class I goes to the voters in 2018
Class II in 2020
Class III just went in 2016 and again in 2022.

Sessions (and then Strange) are in Class II.
