Were being suppressed: Black Alabamians forced to cast provisional ballots

KIRA LERNER at Think Progress

"SNIP..........

DOTHAN, ALABAMA — Dechauna Jiles was excited to cast a ballot on Tuesday for Democratic Senate candidate Doug Jones. She said her parents grew up two blocks from the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, which was bombed by the KKK during the civil rights movement, and it would be a dishonor to her family to not vote in this election.

But when she arrived at her polling place, the First Assembly of God Church, on Tuesday morning, Jiles was told that she was “inactive” on the rolls and would have to cast a provisional ballot — a ballot that will not be counted unless she is able to verify her voter information.

“That makes no sense,” she told ThinkProgress, explaining that the poll workers told her she’d have to drive to another precinct to update her information, even though she voted here last November.

“It’s not that we’re not showing up to vote — we’re being suppressed,” Jiles said. “[Roy Moore, the Republican nominee] is going to win, not because our people didn’t speak, but because our vote was suppressed.”

It's so wrong and so illegal! Isn't there a way to stop it? We can't let this happen during the mid-terms!

And massively documenting and publicizing these kinds of irregularities.

That we've just let it go on without responding is part of the reason it's gotten so bad.

.... she should be able to to vote a regular ballot there today. A provisional ballot does not
mean it is a bad ballot but that it will be counted later if the voter does his or hers "follow up."

Anybody who cast a provisional ballot should be able to call the county BOE and make sure
that their vote is counted.

They make targeted voters work extra hard, taking time off work and school, just to get a vote counted. One times how many thousand over how many precincts?

.... and the BOE's # too. In most case the person voting a provisional ballot
had registered for an absentee ballot and they were flagged in the book.

Although of the lady in question here who voted in '16 @ the same precinct she was
@ today should have voted a regular ballot. Republicans work very hard to
shave the #s of black voters off the voter list every year buy all kinds of scams.

Many southern states should be much more blue than they our today.

If she has to "verify" and drive to another precinct, it sounds like she moved & didn't have a utility bill or something with her? Maybe that's required in that state?

I don't know. I recently moved and registered and voted. No one asked me for a utility bill, BUT I had a picture driver's license ID w/me with my new address on it. I don't think they asked to see that, though. I can't remember. It was a new, recent listing on the rolls.

This is sounding suspicious. I've NEVER had to do a provisional ballot. That to me means her vote may never be counted.

Is there a Dem. Party group there tracking these things?
