36. At a Christmas party several years ago, my husband was telling...

...our host about our younger son's second driver's license suspension for speeding (the kid had a lead foot, to say the least). Our host and my husband had careers in common - airline pilots. They did things together. Our kids attended the same elementary, middle and high schools. We had regarded him as a friend. After my husband related the latest driver's license suspension, our host said to us, ""What you need to do is get yourself a good Jew lawyer."

To say I was shocked would be an understatement, to say the least. Horrified and disgusted comes close. I am usually pretty good at keeping a straight face (occupational requirement when you work in health care), so I probably managed to do so, but my inner voice was screaming. Seeing as we were guests in this man's home, I decided not to comment on his offensive statement.

I am sure this guy has no idea that my opinion of him was forever changed by that single sentence. I don't think we have seen him since.

What was most surprising to me was that it obviously never crossed his mind that we might be Jewish. We aren't, but how arrogant of him to presume that we are not.
