General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'm afraid Alabama is not going to make us happy tomorrow.
I'm sorry. The people here have been working hard and Doug Jones has been doing 5-6 appearances every day so it is not going to be the fault of the candidate.
The people here are just backwards. In 2000 we became the last state to repeal the miscegenation laws that were supposed to keep the races from mingling. Even though biracial kids and relationships were the norm, only 801,725 voters supported repeal of the law. 545,933 voters wanted to keep the law as is. So roughly 40.5% of the voters in 2000 were such racists that they tried to keep people from getting legally married because of color. It was an embarrassment to have so many still wanting to keep the races apart, but we came out on top enough to win. After thinking about this vote and how divided people are on abortion on top of the racism that is growing under Trump, I'm not so sure we can do it tomorrow.
Try to keep in mind that we are not all like that. When this is over tomorrow night, we are the ones still stuck in here fighting. Have a little pity on us that are not able to do anything but wait for the old attitudes to die off with their owners and keep fighting to change people here instead of running.

(3,011 posts)When polls close tomorrow night, I'll start thinking about this.
On the hopeful side, it is very hard to suppress women voters as a voting blok. If they turn on Moore, women could tip the scale.

(12,344 posts)And if Moore gets into the Senate, he will turn people off in other places, so a GOP win might be worse than a loss.

(2,404 posts)That the race is this close is amazing. Jones has a great ground game. Democrats are pissed and I think voter turnout will be good. Many Republicans are disgusted by Moore.
I'm an eternal optimist, but I think he has a damned good chance.

(16,104 posts)it's not the end of the world.
Alabama - like a lot of states - has 2 Republican senators today.
If Moore wins tomorrow?
Alabama has 2 Republican senators - like a lot of states.
We gave it a damn fine shot, and stayed true to the Democratic values everyone says would win elections if we just wouldn't go Republican Lite.
We'll see!
But the world goes on same as always or a little bit better when the votes come in tomorrow evening.
That ain't bad.

(24,736 posts)Maybe it will be the low point - if he wins- and you can say Alabama was the turning point!

(12,344 posts)Betting odds give Jones a 30 percent chance, which is better than Trump's odds were.

(58,662 posts)I'm still hopeful. What we need is for large numbers of white women in AL to shake off the shackles of misogyny and their Christianity-based, institutionalized Stockholm syndrome and vote en masse to tell Alabama's good old boys to fuck off.
We'll see what we see. Best of luck going forward, and hoping for some forward motion in AL.

(711 posts)but it's the best chance we've had to put a Dem in a senate seat in a very long time. My polling place opens in 45 minutes and I'm ready to go. Everyone please send us good vibes, or light a candle, or smoke a lucky cigar. We need all the help we can get.

(3,622 posts)I can sympathize.
Texas has a fighting chance to drag itself into the twentieth and then the twenty-first centuries due to population changes.
Alabama, on the other hand will have to be content with being dragged, kicking and screaming into the nineteenth century.
The census will be vital. It is Alabama's best hope if Jones does not win.

The sad thing is that the 14 year old girl stalking is not even the worst thing about him. In a normal world, he would not even have a chance.
