(16,887 posts)My daughter worked at a women's clinic delivering babies....the things she told me about that she saw....
It is illegal in Tanzania to have an abortion and both a doctor who performs one or a woman who has one can serve as much as 10 years in prison.
My daughter saw young girls who had been raped. Many girls who even at a young age as her had already given birth before to multiple children. Many of them are very poor and after coming to have their baby and rest in a large room set up with beds, they leave the next day. Some facing the fact that they have little money and if they had been raped, that they didn't know how to be caring for these children.
There were some women who had gone to have abortions illegally and ended up in the clinic...the story of one particular one that my daughter had seen, was where she went into labor at about 7 months....there are no neonatal ICU equipment there....the doctors and nurses knew that it was attempted termination of pregnancy gone wrong....they didn't report her...she would have gone to jail....it was declared a still birth...and my daughter was instructed to carry the bucket away....
She said that after this experience she is more committed than ever to a woman's access to reproductive choices, birth control and access to safe abortion. And imagine how these Tanzanian women must feel....they know that they can be raped, inpregnated and forced to bear the child of the rapists...and their President will pardon the men....
