Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks ripped the GOP in a new column, writing that the party is doing harm to every cause it purports to serve.
In an editorial titled The GOP is Rotting, published Friday, Brooks accuses lawmakers of bending to Trumps desires, writing that Trump is defined by shamelessness, and that there is no end to what the president will ask of Republicans.
First, he asked the party to swallow the idea of a narcissistic sexual harasser and a routine liar as its party leader, Brooks writes. Then he asked the party to accept his comprehensive ignorance and his politics of racial division. Now he asks the party to give up its reputation for fiscal conservatism. At the same time he asks the party to become the party of Roy Moore, the party of bigotry, alleged sexual harassment and child assault.
Brooks warns that next, Trump may ask Republicans to accept his firing of special counsel Robert Mueller, which, after some sighing, they will.

Brooks goes on to slam populism for abandoning the intellectual excellence of the GOP of decades past, writing that the current status quo of the party has alienated many people who no longer feel they can call themselves Republicans.
The rot afflicting the G.O.P. is comprehensive moral, intellectual, political and reputational, he writes. More and more former Republicans wake up every day and realize: Im homeless. Im politically homeless.

(82,849 posts)Admit it, David Brooks, you've been in the Republicans' corner for decades, sloughing off any criticism and endorsing their every victory, no matter how bad it was for the country. The money was soooo good, wasn't it?
Now, you've finally bumbled into the realization that Republicanism isn't creating a latter-day Shangri-La. But it's not Republicans' fault, is it? No, according to you, they're "politically homeless," and they all have the sads because of that. Are they literally homeless? Joke! Of course they aren't. If they could just turn a blind eye to the depradations of their cruel political philosophy, things would be all right again. They'd be on top, the people they hate would be getting theirs, and it would be morning in America time again, wouldn't it?
I am sick and tired of the conservative genre that has suddenly realized that after cavorting with demons from hell for the last 50 years, they've acquired a stubborn cachet of brimstone they can't quite eradicate. Oh poor David Brooks! His soul went for a bargain price decades ago, and now he'd like it back again, please. Fuck you, Mr. Brooks. Just fuck you and your hurt fee-fees.
