Call me cynical, but it is very possible that the effort to get Sen. Franken to step down is to take away a talking point when it comes to Roy Moore.
Democrats can say, see we got rid of Conyers and Franken, you republicans are the party of sexual harassers and child molesters.
This is what politics is all about. Six women senators and Tom Perez, the chairman of the DNC, have now abandoned Franken.
In politics if you get caught in the buzzsaw, well that is just too bad.

(51,129 posts)This is bigger than Roy Moore, this is the billionaires securing their hold on power by protecting Trump and their fragile coalition of Republicans and sexual assailants.

(18,765 posts)Since there are rumblings that Repubs will seat Moore saying "you kept Franken"
If Franken resigns Send keep his seat (Dayton will appoint a Democrat) and remove that ammunition from Repubs
Sadly I think it won't work and they will seat Moore no matter what, if he wins

(15,320 posts)Because it's already obvious that the GOP are who they are, and anyone who doesn't see that won't be convinced by this maneuver. The spineless sadsacks signing on to this political chess are just playing into the GOP, who know exactly what they're doing. They're being played like a fiddle.

(11,608 posts)I wrote Senator Franken already telling him this. We already lost President Hillary Clinton because of Republican below-the-belt dirty tricks and cheating.
Why should we stand for this?
Bottom line--if Tweeden had not first come out and started with her false accusation it is doubtful anyone else would have ever come out with a weak accusation of their own. This is only working in that each ridiculous accusation is a chip against his reputation--together they are chipping away, and the whole thing started with the groper herself, Tweeden.
We need to insist on an Ethics Committee investigation. It is the only way to root out the false accusations and deter future false attacks as a new weapon against Democrats.

(42,000 posts)This is politics. If we are going to have a standardDemocrats that is, Republicans have no standards, it needs to be consistent. If we are going to hold Trump, for instance to that standard or Moore, we have to hold everyone else to the same one.
But I thought Franken called for an ethics review? No one else has done that.

(115,831 posts)So Democrats drive out one of their own - one of the best, most effective Senators we have - in order to make the point that sexual harassment won't be tolerated (even, apparently, if almost all of the complaints are anonymous and not particularly credible) and to shame the GOP into rejecting Roy Moore.
It won't make any difference because the GOP have no shame. They will accept a child molester as long as he votes for tax cuts, and a president who is an admitted sexual predator. Where would they draw the line? Anywhere? Would Ted Bundy be too much? Jeffrey Dahmer? Ed Gein? At this point I think serial killers and cannibals would be accepted if they promised to vote for tax cuts. Once again, Dems fold like cheap lawn chairs. And the GOP will sit back and laugh as we cut our own throats.

(40,219 posts)I do not think this is going to get Moire to step aside.
My point is that democrats are willing to throw Franken aside for the benefit of a talking point.

(10,043 posts)The GOP will just parrot that all of the Dems are obviously guilty perverts because they resign, unlike the GOP accused that will continue their immoral behavior and call their accusers liars. The MAGA crowd will be energized.

(16,123 posts)to keep Moore in the Senate.
In fact, those very senators who demand Franken's resignation will sit and clap politely for Moore when he assumes his place.
Meanwhile, we're about to lose everything because now it is very clear that ANY anonymous suggestion of anything will cause any Dem to be forced out by our own party. We're doing their job for them.
But, hey, they might let us keep a few seats for form's sake and to have a few people to blame when they need a scapegoat.

(27,827 posts)Frankly, I'm disappointed in Tom Perez, too.
Franken was getting under the GOP's skin. His incisive remarks and questions at the hearings were extremely effective. This is why Bannon & Co are driving this narrative so heavily.
