I think it means that people are in definite, separate groups (us against them). This is bad for our country to be so divided.

with a complete unwillingness to examine the faults of your own “tribe” (political party or identity). Any criticism or opinion that is against the “approved opinion” is viewed as an outsider attack on the “tribe.”

Thus they form special interest groups based on racial, linguistic, religious, political, cultural, economic class, and other factors.

It becomes tribal when the affinity to the group becomes stronger than affinity to the whole, and therefore the groups begin to actively compete in the interest of their members to the detriment of the whole society.
