Was the rigging of his apartment to destroy his tracks?

Did he want to erase any evidence that would let us know why he was doing what he did?

Or was it to inflict more damage and death?

He told them about it. My guess is he thought it would blow up due to one of his neighbors entering his apartment. Since it didn't happen, he told the cops, or he wasn't sure if it happened and said something about it.

What little information has come out has said that between the explosives and gasoline, there was enough to level his building and both adjacent buildings.

5. Originally a diversion?

I thought I read these things somewhere:
that he had set the apartment to go off as a diversion to get more time
that he left loud music on automatic for an hour
that the front door was unlocked

all of this together seemed to say that he wanted the music to get either a neighbor or an officer summoned by a neighbor to open the door and set off the whole thing to pull the cops out to his house while he went to the theatre.

Don't know how uch I read as fact and how much was projected by me in that though.

Watch that movie and you'll understand that he was trying to kill a bunch of first responders while in jail.
