General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs it just me or is the way out of context "You didn't build that" quote spreading like wildfire?
I'm seeing a ton of people on Facebook, and not just conservative family members but also some more moderate friends, spreading around cartoons or quotes mocking Obama for the quote and suggesting, like Romney is, that Obama said business owners didn't build their business. It's disgustingly false, of course, but this quote really looks like it's hurting the president right now, at least in my experience. It definitely has me worried right now. Anybody else noticing this?

(16,230 posts)but it is worrying to me. It is also worrying in general that his opponents are so willing to outright lie about him and that people are so willing to accept those lies. If corporations spend millions or billions spreading outright lies, where do we get the resources to explain the truth?
A lie is simple and easy to spread as a soundbite. The truth often requires more time and explanation. Most people hear the soundbites but won't bother to search out or think about an explanation.

(24,396 posts)Because no matter what the RW echo chamber says, Romney doesn't have the truth on his side. All that needs to happen is for Obama to challenge him on the lie during the debates, man-to-man and in front of the whole country.
That won't happen unless the meme catches on, which it won't. Plenty of Romney dirt will arise before the debates, dirt based on facts, not fantasy. The "didn't build' meme needs Romney to actively keep it alive. I don't see that happening over the next 4 months.

(14,549 posts)It is paired with "bogus" in all the top results, even the Fox entry. We are witnessing a masterful campaign, masterful use of the internet and masterful use of rapid response.
Romney called out on his lies AGAIN. If Romney can't find something legitimate and honest to attack Obama with then maybe there is nothing. Romney has in effect vetted Obama and Obama passed -- nothing (honest) to hide.

(108 posts)It's just politics. In the end, people aren't going to base their votes on one little phrase. They are going to look at the overall picture of both candidates.

(5,325 posts)Of course the context is missing. This is politics, after all, and pulling one candidate's words or the other's out of context and splashing them all over the place is part of the way politics is done these days, both from the right and the left. It's ugly, but anyone who thinks that such isn't a tool used by both sides is deluding him/herself 'cause it is.
As I've said before, the President used a very unfortunate choice of words and used them on camera. And they're going to be played over and over, not unlike the infamous "I was for the $87 million before I was against it". He said it. They'll use it.
How much long-range traction the quote gets remains to be seen.
