This is when that lying son of a bitch Mitch McConnell promised Susan Collins that Medicare and elderly programs would escape unscathed by the GOP tax plan.
He flat-out lied to her to get her vote, plain and simple.

(7,432 posts)And that will be the final vote once the bill gets out of Conference Committee. My prediction is that because of the Mueller investigation and the fact that the tax giveaway bill is wildly unpopular and getting even more so, the GOP will fall into disarray and will NOT be able to pass the final version. A minority of GOPers will understand that passing the bill is no accomplishment; rather, it will be the death knell of the Republican Party. You can't stick it to a few hundred million citizens without getting some backlash. A LOT of backlash.
The GOP is in a desperate predicament. If the final bill PASSES, they will cause a self-inflicted wound from which they may not recover-- as a political party. The entire nation will be at their necks, and they WILL be voted out of office in 2018. If the final bill FAILS, they will lose their donors by the droves.
This predicament is of the GOP's own choosing. They didn't have to tie themselves to fascists, Russians, and white supremacists. They didn't have to show such fervent soliciting to the far right. They could have pretended to be more inclusive. They could have dumped Trumpy during the 2016 primaries. Now, Trumpy regularly and brazenly highlights ALL of the GOP's untold secrets for getting elected: lying about populist policies while laundering Russian money and kissing the asses of the entrenched corporatists. Now, a strong majority of the nation can see the obvious.
For decades and perhaps more, the GOP has been the champion of the elitists, the corporatists, the big money bags. They manipulated the electorate by pounding away at culture war wedge issues. That's been their formula for success. It's coming to an end. With Trumpy, they went far beyond the point of overplaying their hand. Now the entire leadership is being targeted by Mueller for RICO violations, and Mueller isn't joking. Those who have a lick of sense in the GOP will see what's coming and will jump off the train before it crashes.
