I think the GOP has plans to trash the next election so they cannot lose. I think there is more trouble ahead. And the felony trials after the inauguration are really about suppressing public dissent. So if you go to a rally and some one even damages a public sing everyone will be arrested.
Sure what I have just said sounds extreme. But what can one think when we see one party passing secret legislation at the demand of their billionaire donors.
I believe this tax vote is a sign of a lot worse to come. The GOP was stung by the kick back at the town halls We saw how they reacted. They were angry at even being questioned. They were smug and indifferent. And in the future they will remedy any kickback by arresting protesters and jailing them.
Am I being alarmist. Perhaps, but the feel of all of this mayhem is really not very good.

(1,751 posts)People, the resistors, think the regular election process will save us.
I say that is a false hope. People arrested in DC during the inauguration are facing felony charges.
Progressives are going to be hurt. The democratic process in America is going the way of the dodo.
If you are counting on Mueller to help that ain't gonna help. Trump will declare war on N. Korea. The threat of nuclear retaliation will lead to the declaration of Martial law. All elections will be suspended until the security of the US can be assured. How long do you think that assurance will take?
I don't think you're being alarmist at all. Are you prepared for violence? Are you committed to engaging in the violence needed to save the country? Too many people think we will have a peaceful revolution in November. We might but I doubt it.

(42,708 posts)Here is how the SCOTUS has described the circumstances when "martial law" might be declared:
"If, in foreign invasion or civil war, the courts are actually closed, and it is impossible to administer criminal justice according to law, then, on the theatre of active military operations, where war really prevails, there is a necessity to furnish a substitute for the civil authority, thus overthrown, to preserve the safety of the army and society; and as no power is left but the military, it is allowed to govern by martial rule until the laws can have their free course. As necessity creates the rule, so it limits its duration; for, if this government is continued after the courts are reinstated, it is a gross usurpation of power. Martial rule can never exist where the courts are open, and in the proper and unobstructed exercise of their jurisdiction. It is also confined to the locality of actual war."

In 1979 you could go to the beach in a bikini or to a bar and get trashed. Now Iran is a dictatorship. They all probably thought the next election would take care of it, too.
What if it doesn't?
