Looks like dementia, even.
I dislike this man almost as much as any public figure (not as much as Cheney, of course), but not going to the Republican convention, talking about his presidency as though it was designed to be a rewarding experience for him like an extended summer camp, and his general demeanor recently, all seem to point to someone who profoundly doesn't care or is on medication or . . .
Has anyone else noticed this? Have otehrs commented on it?

(326 posts)I honestly don't believe he ever wanted to be where he ended up . . . he ran to show daddy that he was better, and didn't realize just hard the job was. He is probably delighted to be out of it, on his ranch and being basically left alone. And yeah I'm guessing non alcoholic beer isn't his first choice these days.

(9,033 posts)I'm sure he is drinking--not "again" because that would imply that he had stopped, but more than when he was in office.
As for being back on his ranch, he bought it in '99 when he was running for president, and moved to a new house in Dallas as soon as he was out. It was a hobby ranch, by Texas standards, and I think he had 5 cows. He cleared brush on all his vacations 'cause that was the only manly, ranchy-type outdoor activity he could handle. Certainly getting anywhere near a horse was beyond his comfort zone.

Warpy
(111,270 posts)and I'll bet as soon as he got out of office and found out how much of the country thought he was a total fuckup, the pain of that got him maintenance drinking again. It's the only way he can maintain the illusion that was maintained for him by the White House bubble during his 8 illegitimate years in office, the illusion of certitude, rectitude, and competence.
I almost feel sorry for him as the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome progresses. Almost. I know what he's facing down the road and I know how hard it is to get men like him into any sort of treatment.

But now it seems different, or perhaps he just doesn't care anymore to maintain an appearance of concern.
PatSeg
(47,496 posts)and I agree he doesn't seem to care anymore. He isn't running for anything, so he doesn't have to try to please anyone. He also looks like he's been drinking (or medication?).

(12,051 posts)about him! And how it gratified him!
This doesn't discount the notion that he may also be on drugs/alcohol or just be a stupid entitled little shit as well, but for me the "sociopath" label has always applied to this little asshole.
PatSeg
(47,496 posts)whereas you'd expect a former president to talk about what a privilege it was to SERVE his/her country.
He sounded like a 12 year old kid who got to play a president in a play. "It was awesome!"

(102,289 posts)so, I'm not surprised. And as others have pointed out, he is likely drinking again.

(23,664 posts)If we're going to judge his mental health based on his actions and/or public utterances, it would be awful hard to spot a downward trend in his sanity. He was always out of it.
I think we've all forgotten just how goofy the bastard actually is and so when we see or hear him and he looks acts or sounds goofy, we're surprised.

(52,247 posts)and the way he talked about the presidency in completely narcissistic and sociopathic terms is completely consistent with the narcissism and sociopathy he has always displayed.
as for being on "medication", i'm quite confident that he really resented not being able to be constantly self-medicated while in the public eye and this is the main reason why he doesn't miss it.

(10,103 posts)And yes, either drink or drugs. In that, I feel moderate sympathy...for his wife, for the nation he led, for a lot of things. But I think, like Ronald Reagan before him, he was a tool and a fool. He is also a war criminal, aided and abetted by the other war criminals in his administration.
But again, like Reagan, there is so little left of the essence of George Bush that trying and jailing him for war crimes is probably a useless proposition; there's nothing there, and hasn't been for a long time.

(31,518 posts)I don't believe he ever had a desire to perform a public service, it was all about ego. He was chosen to be the Republican Presidential candidate because of his name recognition and the fact that he could be manipulated by the PTB once he was elected. It was all a game to him. Now that he's done it, he's through. It was hard work and he doesn't intend to work anymore. As far as drinking or being on medication, I think it's highly likely.
As I said, JMHO.

(5,420 posts)That's what drove him to go for a second term too. He wanted to not just equal him but one-up him by getting not only a second term but also removing Saddam since his father failed to do that.
If any of the shit about the Franklin coverup is true, I can see why Georgie may subconsciously hate Poppy. It isn't hard to see it drive him.

(18,998 posts)And I have known several in my life...and took the time to read some books on the subject of how alcohol effects the brain.
It destroys brain cells in the frontal lobe and that is the part of the brain that gives us morality and reasoning...and every later stage alcoholic becomes amoral and uses poor reasoning because of the damage....and in the later stages it becomes permanent.
Learning that made me give up drinking for good...and I don't miss it at all.

(32,723 posts)Of course, I remember how much prep they had to do to shove his dumb ass behind a podium. I swear there were times when it looked like they had pumped him full of something because he would pause for no reason as if he was going through a rush, often hanging on to the podium for support.
Look at some of his speeches and see how fast he turns the pages. I swear, some of those pages only had a few words on them. Probably large print so he didn't have to use his glasses but amounting to a string of post-it notes.
What I found disgusting is how he acted like he was lucky THEY let him be President for a while. Right after his tailhook landing he said he was glad THEY let him do it. He was supposed to be the one in charge but the idiot didn't even know enough to keep that illusion intact.

(166 posts)George W. Bush viewed the presidency like an eight-year baseball fantasy camp. It was just for his personal entertainment and fulfillment. It was always just about him.
It's the same for Mitt Romney. He looks upon the presidency as other plutocrats view owning a pro-sports team or flying around the world in a balloon -- just a rich man's hobby.
One would think the American people would have learned something about electing self-absorbed members of the Lucky Sperm Club president after Dubya.
