I really think I've got it figured out.
Imagine for a moment that Trump was merely in the mediocre to bad range ... for argument's sake, let's say James Buchanan-like. In that instance it would be possible for a voter to say, "Damn, that wasn't the wisest vote I ever cast."
However, such is not the case.
Because Trump is so cataclysmically, incomprehensibly, racist, misogynistic, thin-skinned, pig-ignorant, and generally fucked-in-the-head, that there can be no excuse for voting for him!
Therefore, those poor benighted fools have to pretend that he is not, by any reasonable metric, the worst President in American history. That way they are not forced to confront their own stupidity and culpability.

People hate admitting they made a mistake - that's just human nature. And if you've made a huge, really dumb mistake that defies explanation, if you finally admit the mistake how are you going to justify it? You'll look like a total moron. But Trump could not have succeeded without having an "enemy" to serve as a foil....that "enemy" was the media....and that "enemy" was Hillary Clinton.
