Donald Trump returned to a favourite subject on Thursday, telling a US coast guard audience the air force was ordering a new plane that was “almost like an invisible fighter”.

The plane in question, the F-35, is not invisible, though it is unusually small and designed to be less visible to radar than conventional aircraft. Its development, however, has proved all too visibly costly and riddled with problems.

Trump first startled reporters with talk of an invisible plane in October, when he discussed the F-35 at a military briefing in hurricane-hit Puerto Rico.

“Amazing job,” Trump said then. “So amazing we are ordering hundreds of millions of dollars of new airplanes for the air force, especially the F-35. You like the F-35? ... You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see.”.......................................

The shadow jets are expected to replace the B-52, B1-B and B-2 bombers within years. The jet takes a similar bat shape to the B-2 and would be able to partly make itself invisible.

(CNN)President Donald Trump stopped by a local Coast Guard station in Florida on Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving. While there, he gave a speech extolling the virtues of the Coast Guard "brand" and talking about how everything is now better thanks to, well, him.
I went through the speech and picked out a handful of the oddest quotes. Happy Black Friday!
1. "But if you were looking at it as a brand, there's no brand that went up more than the Coast Guard, with what happened in Texas."
The Coast Guard brand has never been higher! We are moving all sorts of Coast Guard merch right now!
2. "You saved 16,000 lives -- nobody knows that -- 16,000 lives."
Trump routinely cites this 16,000 number. I couldn't find where he gets it, however. The closest I came was this piece from September that says the Coast Guard rescued just north of 11,000 people in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
3. "That was a big water job, right? It kept coming in and going back."

4. "I think that there is no brand, of any kind -- I'm not just talking about a military brand -- that has gone up more than the Coast Guard."

If you look real close (I'm afraid I have a few times, because I find it fascinating), the three guys behind him don't quite keep straight faces.

Their eyes flit left and right quite often at key moments, like "What are my teammates making of this?" and the guy on the left starts to grin as Trump starts in on "you can't see it", but manages to revert to a straight face for the cameras. The guy in the middle has a fixed "What the hell am I listening to?" stare at the back of Trump's head more or less throughout, and you can see the whites of his eyes as they widen at key points. The guy on the right looks like he'd rather be in a bar, but he's definitely having problems holding it together.

None of them look anything but various shades of "WTF?" and rather bored till Trump turns round toward them as he thinks he's made a joke. Then they flash wan smiles and there's some brief weak, slightly nervous laughter, but their faces instantly collapse back to the same grim get-this-over-please expressions as before when he turns to the front again.

I hope they had a Happy Thanksgiving.
