To many of those folks down in Alabama, who support Roy Moore, - their religion, their church, - is their community, which their lives revolve around. Someone who has known Roy Moore, for say, 10-15 years - after these incidents with the young girls took place -
and see him as an honorable, God- fearing, Christian man, would find it near impossible to believe that Roy would do any such things, and the timing of these now surfacing is very strange. To them, Satan is lurking behind every bush, just waiting to use whatever methods he can to de-rail God's plan. In their minds, God created the US as a Christian nation, chosen by the Big Guy Himself to receive His blessing. (Why it has taken 2000 years and still over half the worlds' population still does not accept Jay-zyz as Saviour doesn't seem to matter; It Will Happen).
In a way, it is a win-win situation; for if Moore wins, then it is proof that God is indeed on their side and now an Old Testament Prophet type is in a position of national power; yet, on the other hand, should Moore lose, it validates the idea that there are powerful, sinister forces trying to halt God's agenda, and they need to be stronger, and dig in, closing ranks and being less open and more suspicious of contrary doctrine. Think of all the money ol' Pat Robertson can raise by convincing elderly widows to part with their Social Security checks to help combat the Satanic/Liberal/Commie forces who hate God and all who worship Him. We don't want God to remove His protection and blessings from the USA, because somewhere 2 gay people got married, or a poor teenage girl got an abortion, so send money (Off topic - but, why does an omnipotent, supernatural being, who can create the whole universe need money? Just asking; He parted the Red Sea, couldn't He just move some money from the Russian treasury over to Pats' checking account by whatever magick He does? Or snap His Divine Fingers, and, lo and behold, it is raining Benjamins)!! And, yes, they will be claiming persecution, because that is what they always do when they don't get to make all the rules. My hope would be that instead of further alienating the RW Christians, some of them begin to see that what the supposed Christian values - compassion, non-violence, help the less fortunate, all people are equal in God's eye, feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, help the needy, judge not lest ye be judged, humility, kindness, et al, become more important than the Calvinist warped
religion that they adhere to.
