Federal judge strikes down Texas abortion ban

(CNN)A federal judge has struck down Texas' ban on a common second-trimester abortion procedure.

On Wednesday, US District Judge Lee Yeakel overturned Texas Senate Bill 8 -- which was passed earlier this year and banned doctors from performing dilation and evacuation abortions.

"That a woman may make the decision to have an abortion before a fetus may survive outside her womb is solely and exclusively the woman's decision. The power to make this decision is her right," Yeakel wrote.

In a D&E abortion, a doctor dilates the patient's cervix before dismembering and removing the fetus. Senate Bill 8 banned doctors from performing such abortions unless they first stopped a fetus' heart using another method.

Their goal is to get to the Supreme Court and get all choice banned.

Why would the article say it's necessary to "dismember" the fetus when the body is like rubber at that stage of development without bones as we know them (ave size at 24 weeks is 9" and less than two pounds)?

I'm so tired of the (usually conservative white male) hysterical bullshit that always accompanies any story or news about women's rights and this medical procedure. I worked in the OR for 10 years as a scrub nurse and when I hear things said, or implied, like the "dismemberment" crap, that are clearly meant to push buttons it pisses me off.

That said, this is great news for women and our fight for human rights!
