The American Wild Horse Campaign on Thursday harshly criticized Interior Sec. Ryan Zinke's appointment of Brian Steed, the former chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT), as the acting director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as dangerous and out of step with the wishes of the vast majority of Americans.
"Rep. Stewart is leading the charge to slaughter America's wild horses and burros over the opposition of 80 percent of Americans," said Suzanne Roy, AWHC Executive Director. "Putting his deputy at the helm of the agency charged with protecting these national icons is like putting the wolf in charge of the chicken coop."
"Americans don't want the government to be in the horse slaughter business, and Interior Secretary Zinke should appoint someone to lead the Bureau of Land Management who is committed to protecting, not destroying, America's historic mustangs," Roy concluded.
Roy added that the long-term leadership for this agency, which manages 245 million acres of public land in the West, should be determined through a full and transparent confirmation process, not a late-in-the-day political appointment by the secretary.
In July, the U.S. House of Representatives issued what AWHC called a "death warrant" when it passed the "Stewart Amendment" to a 2018 spending bill that would allow for the destruction of wild horses and burros the BLM considers to be surplus. The Senate has yet to weigh in on the subject, but if it concurs, the amendment could lead to the killing of more than 90,000 wild horses on the range and in holding facilities.

(34,661 posts)we have a very vocal Minority of so called Ranchers who blame our Wild Horses and Burros for destroying the BLM managed Range Lands that they Lease for a little over a Dollar a Cow Unit.
First off,the largest of the Grassing permits go to two Ranching Operators. King Ranch's of Texas and Farm Ranches which are a Tax Exempt entity of a Certain dominate Religious Group based in Salt Lake City.
Folks,it is all about Climate Change,we have been in this persistent Drought Cycle since 1997 with no relief to the Interior Lands of Nevada, and Western Utah where the Cattle Grazing is under major stress.
The Land has been over grazed to the point it has to be allowed to replenish itself which could and will take up to twenty years to happen.
BTW,these Horse's will end up in Slaughter- Houses in Mexico .

(9,460 posts)from our public lands comes from the welfare ranchers. The BLM and Forest Service kowtow to these ranchers because a lot of the BLM and Forest Service people come from welfare ranching families. Horses are removed so more cattle can be put on our land. American tax payers heavily subsidize these ranchers some of which are billionaires. Make no mistake, this is about greed.

The BLM roundups of wild horses and burros are inhumane.

(22,149 posts)And I rarely use that term. Yeah, let's make America great again by destroying everything that stands for America.
This is OUR land. OURS! And OUR horses and burro's. As others have said, this is all about the mega-ranchers greed. They lease this land from us for pennies, then don't want to share it with our horses. Horses don't graze the same way cattle do anyway, and burro's even less so.
Zinke is one more asshole selling us out, with no clue about ramifications. Next thing you know they'll be wanting to reopen the horse slaughter houses in this country, instead of .60 per pound going to Mexico and Canada.
Fuckers!
