Two accidentally shot in church while discussing church shootings

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A man accidentally shot himself and his wife at an east Tennessee church on Thursday while he was showing off his gun during a discussion on recent church shootings, police said.

A man in his 80s pulled out a .380 caliber Ruger handgun and said, "I carry my handgun everywhere," according to Parks.

He removed the magazine, cleared the chamber, and showed the gun to some of the men in the church. He put the magazine back in, apparently loaded a round in the chamber, and returned the gun to its holster, Parks said.

"Evidently he just forgot that he re-chambered the weapon," Parks said.

We know all kinds of things from this article, including that no charges are going to be filed against this idiot for reckless endangerment or some such thing for shooting his wife. What we don't know is his name. Must respect an idiot's privacy, even when he's "accidentally" shooting up churches and people.

Except for rape or crimes against a minor, the media routinely disclose the identity of the victim. Not naming the dumbass with the gun protects only the dumbass and his gun.

One other aspect of the regulation of firearms discussion we're not having in this country needs to be an enlarged and thorough discussion of gun owners who "have suffered enough" because they wounded or killed a loved one through their careless handling (including storage) of their firearms.

Guns are accidents waiting to happen. People who feel "safe" around guns are insane.

Mysterious scratches and dents in the family car? It might be a clue he is too old to pack heat if he shoots himself and Granny after forgetting he loaded the old sidearm with live ammo. 🙄
