Arab body says monitors should quit Syria promptly

CAIRO | Sun Jan 1, 2012 7:16am EST

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Arab League advisory body called on Sunday for the immediate withdrawal of the organization's monitoring mission in Syria, saying it was allowing Damascus to cover up continued violence and abuses.

The Arab Parliament, an 88-member advisory committee of delegates from each of the League's member states, on Sunday said the violence was continuing to claim many victims.

"For this to happen in the presence of Arab monitors has roused the anger of Arab people and negates the purpose of sending a fact-finding mission," the organization's chairman Ali al-Salem al-Dekbas said.

"This is giving the Syrian regime an Arab cover for continuing its inhumane actions under the eyes and ears of the Arab League," he said.

I'm still unclear if this vote by vote of the parliament, or was a statement by Ali Al-Salem Al-Dekb David__77 Jan 2012 #3

I wonder if we'll get a national debate this time to determine the will of the people, before our nation is committed to another armed conflict?

(LOL no I don't really wonder, I know the debate will start only after we're engaged in battle. We will not be consulted about anything important.)

Russia was instrumental in getting Syria to accept the monitors. Syria is supported and armed by Iran, Russia and China.

The monitors were supposed to prevent any other foreign intervention.

I think it is a shame that Syria did not comply.

Edit

If there is armed conflict, it will be an outside Sunni force supported by Qatar.

If it's the latter, he may as chairman by empowered to speak on behalf of the parliament, but I do wonder the position of the 88 members. Ali Al-Salem Al-Dekbas has been critical of the league's position vis-a-vis Syria from the beginning, actually. If the monitoring mission is a league initiative, can't it report its findings, and then a decision be made on that basis? Isn't that the point of a mission - to obtain data?
