Tim Keller, the Democratic state auditor, is the apparent winner of the Mayoral runoff race in Albuquerque, NM. He has defeated a Republican, Dan Lewis, who has run a barrage of negative fear based campaign ads on TV these last few weeks. In the race for the open city council seat, the Democrat, Cynthia Borrego is holding a strong lead. This seems to be following the trend in elections that we have witnessed since last Tuesday.

(804 posts)mostly because early voting here was a huge turnout, and from that early vote, 63 percent went for Keller. Very encouraged by this as Lewis had been running very negative ads. I think folks are making a statement against the current administration, both nationally and locally.

When Trump did his first rally here, they had to sneak him out tbe back door. With all he had said about Hispanics, the grounds of the venue and streets were covered with angry people of every race and color.

(25,894 posts)I'm in Santa Fe, and it's nice to see ABQ go to a Democratic mayor.
Next we need a Democratic Governor (next year) and a Democratic Representative in our 2nd District. Oh, and to elect another Dem in the 3rd District, as that person is running for Governor.
By and large the southern part of the state, meaning south of Albuquerque, tends Republican. North, including generally Albuquerque, tends Democratic. The reason we wound up with a Republican governor is that in 2010 citizens were generally fed up with Bill Richardson, and since the Democrat running that year had been his lieutenant governor, a lot of people reflexively voted for her opponent. And in 2014 the Democrats did a totally crappy job of running anyone (five person primary won by someone with name recognition, and in a state that relies heavily on name recognition and who's related to who that mattered) and so Susana Martinez, a fairly incompetent governor, won re-election.
I have to say, that as someone who has been involved in Democratic party politics at various times in the past, I'm quite struck by the general incompetence of the party in this state.

(34,195 posts)We now have a Democratic Mayor,
and Trump supporter Dan Lewis is off the City Council.
If the trend continues, we'll have City Hall and the City Council.
Time to revisit passing a higher minimum wage, and sick leave for workers in Albuquerque.
