We in Atlanta are experiencing mail deliveries up until around 8 pm in the metro area and the Postmaster is being evasive as to why. The Union says it's because of short staffing.
I am just wondering if you all have noticed your mail arriving consistently later than you are used to.
Thanks!

(1,214 posts)We live in an apartment complex. Been here close to five years now (wow). The mail truck used to be here in the morning but now its usually after 3:00pm, and theyve been here as late as 8:00pm. Thats not a huge issue for me.
But they make a lot of mistakes.
Most small items are delivered to the mail boxes (in a little free-standing building), and larger items go to the apartment doors. Over the past year or two, its gotten really unpredictable - boxes are left at the wrong doors and even the wrong buildings, and our mail box always has other peoples mail. Everyone living here is really helpful about it; misdelivered mail gets left on the counter in the building and boxes get taken to the office (even though they dont officially take deliveries). Honestly its a pain.

I suspect it is a sign of some pretty unhappy/unsatisfied, likely overworked, employees.

(717 posts)They will ring my bell, I will answer, then they don't come to the door. Later I will find a "Note home notice" in my box. This ticks me off. They know I am home but wont walk one flight to deliver something important. I know they know I'm home because they have used my bell for years, I'm disabled and usually here, especially later in the day.

(16,093 posts)Our mail gets delivered between 1 and 2 pm, daily! The one place that I do notice personnel shortages is at the post office, most only have one or two clerks working, with two to three unmanned positions!

(14,157 posts)Is using USPS as cheap ways to deliver packages on the last leg of the transit. It's now the holidays. Not enough staff.

(17,865 posts)That is my observation below. This is something that really needs a Congressional hearing. At least folks need to recognize that the only way Amazon/UPS/FedEx etc can maintain their business model is with the infrastructure of the USPS. Maybe it makes economic sense, but I suspect too much of the economic benefit flows to these large companies.

(17,865 posts)are something. The postal worker sure look harried as he drove around our neighborhood. Something is telling me that Amazon/UPS etc are not paying enough for this service.

(1,819 posts)It's because of lack of staffing career professionals. They hire lower paid individuals without any testing then in time allow them to become career professionals.
Also they've closed several plants and consolidated the mail processing plants during the economic downturn. Now the economy is picking up and they can't keep up.

(12,158 posts)Do more with less. More work done by fewer and fewer employees. I am on a rural route. My regular carrier has a larger route than in the past. When she is off, usually Saturdays the mail is really late - coming as late as 6:30 PM. This is because the carrier substituting for her has to do 2 routes.
Fewer clerks + more machine sorting at far away hubs + fewer carriers = later mail with lots of errors.

(60,010 posts)But, service is still pretty regular, partly because we are in a small town.
"my" carrier is the same one I've had since 1994, he brings things that don't fit in the mailbox directly to my porch, down the driveway from the box on the street.
I tip him every Christmas. ( Ssshhhh)
I suspect larger towns/cities are having a more difficult problem.

(12,158 posts)Her substitute took over and was trained well. When we get packages that don't fit in our box she will walk them to the porch-placing our letter mail underneath so they don't blow away. She is a treasure.

(15,812 posts)Four hours earlier. We had some carrier complaints in the neighborhood; apparently this is the post offices solution - carrier was consistently delivering to wrong addresses. Dont know if its a new carrier since Im usually at work when they stop by now.

(8,311 posts)... and while we used to get them around near 1 PMish, now sometimes it's after people are getting off of work.
I know the holiday madness shopping has already started, and will only get worse. I'm glad that many businesses are actually using the USPS because of competitive rates -- I know Amazon and Ebay are big USPS business drivers.
Sadly I am also sure that delivering packages cost more than envelopes. I still do paperless billing, but junk mail and collection agencies should keep being the USPS's easier bread and butter.

(25,898 posts)She makes lots of errors and mis-deliveries, and calls in sick about every other week. Those days the mail arrives very late because they have to call in a substitute, and I think it's usually someone who does her route after he completes his.
Haven't yet noticed to later deliveries due to holiday mail increase. That seems to occur after Thanksgiving.

(5,559 posts)Our old carrier broke my storm door, sometimes would not take outgoing mail, misdelivered mail, and I occasionally found letters in the yard.
We finally have someone new, I guess the complaints added up eventually

(21,192 posts)It comes later in the day now. I saw the mailman yesterday around 2 pm pickling up mail for the box but did not get delivery until after 6 pm. I heard they are having problems hiring people who want to do the job. I suspect the isps is having money problems because of the rethug poison pill to fund pensions every year at a ridiculous amount.
