(13,081 posts)Doesnt mean you stopped being young.
The three year old you that sometimes just wants to cuddle and cry until you dont feel like crying anymore? Still there. The ten year old that cant wait to explore the woods down the street because you heard there might be bank robbers money hidden there? Still around. The seventeen year old that wants to sneak a drink from your parents liquor cabinet just to see what the big deal is and why-doesnt-anybody-ever-listen-to-me-I-cant-wait-to-move-out? Still inside, full of angst and hope. The forty year old that feels regretful for having treated your own children like your parents treated you, despite your many self-assurances that you would never be like them? Yep, that persons still there, too.
Its like tree rings, except we have access to all of our best (and worst) selves whenever we need or want.

(5,167 posts)I realized at about 70 that if I were in an accident - automotive or otherwise- that a newspaper article would describe me as "elderly".
I also think about how I perceived my grandparents and their generation when I was a young adult - 20ish. - To me they were old, though still functional, etc.
On the other hand, many, if not most, at 70 can handle their lives well.
70 is certainly better than 80, for sure.
At 70, and throughout the 70's, one can still look forward to many good times and good days.

It's interesting how perspective changes. It reminds me of the old tale of Peter Pan: he was a man-child, who wanted to stay young and play. Wendy recognized that life changes as you become an adult. And Captain Hook, already damaged physically by time & nature, dreaded hearing the clock ticking.
I never anticipated living to 30 when I was a teen. But then, in my mid-20s, I had my first child, and everything changed.

(34,092 posts)At 61, I don't feel old. But I've been getting some senior discouns for 6 years now.
In my late 50s, I thought nothing of hopping on my bike for a 2-day, 150 mile ride. I haven't been recently - just because of my work schedule - but the other day I realized that I might at least have to think twice about it. And I tried hopping around work (when no no one was there - to counter the bone-thinning effects of anti-cancer medication), and realized that while hopping in place was no big deal - hopping from one place to another was a different matter.
On the other hand, I'm working 80-100 hours a week - and loving it. I'd love it every bit as much if there were half of it, but it isn't a burden - and I can easily see myself working another decade (when I've pegged retirement).
And - just recently - I've noticed it is harder and harder to remember names . . . of course, that could well be due to the minimal sleep I'm getting in order to put in the 80-100 hours a week.

(9,287 posts)Orange Nero is incapable of reflection and his age is a sore spot because it reminds him of his mortality. It is all dust except love. He is a man that hates passionately but has no room for the wisdom of age or the simple understanding that we are all fellow passengers to the grave.
I turned 60 this year and I think regularly about how can I be the best person in the time remaining. I look at a variety of people in my life that are kind and generous and loving. I see that and I want to be that. It is amazingly how many heroes there are if we look around.
You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving. The great acts of love are done by those who are habitually performing small acts of kindness. We pardon to the extent that we love. Love is knowing that even when you are alone, you will never be lonely again, and great happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved. The late 60s, as you point out, are the first time of life when, in larger numbers, we encounter the headwinds of physical breakdown. With some luck, most of us dont go out so quickly. But the echoes of those weve lost remain.

(6,044 posts)I lived in a small town for several years. It was too small to have a youth culture.
People related to each other as though they were all just people;
the only exceptions were very young children who were sort of learning the social ropes and needed a little help.
I did not realize the difference from my city life until one day I was at the check out in the supermarket and the clerk, whom I knew to be 16, started grousing about the price of bananas , and then started talking about which specialty food he liked and which he did not. Everyone joined in.
No city teenager I knew would have brought up this kind of topic-they would consider it old people's talk.
It was an epiphany for me-the shoppers were of all ages, we weren't young or old, or middle-aged to each other.
There was much I did not like about the town-a bit too narrow and too religion-oriented, not as diverse as I would like, and probably full of unconscious prejudice toward outsiders--but the affinity and age group walls were not there to the extent they are in many cities.
I'v thought about this while reading the many posts about who should be able to run for office-and who is "too old."
This small town would be unlikely to have that kind of conversation about fitness for office.

(51,311 posts)How many pills do y'all "70 and Overs" take daily? How are your knees? Do you have the dreaded 'betes? Cataract surgeries? How's your hair and skin? Any teeth implants? I don't know one of this age 70+ group who doesn't need a walker or a cane.

(23,337 posts)I just turned 53 and while my body has aches and pains it didn't 10 years ago, I can still kick some ass and accomplish a lot in a day. I gave birth to my son when I was 41. He is 12 now and he has been instrumental in keeping me young in body and spirit. The Dotard, on the other hand, is old and rigid...closed mind and heart....dead already.
99 is old.

(823 posts)notice that that is a moving target I will never reach. I am not old, I am just sore and tired.

(30,764 posts)Most, not all, have lived into their eighties and nineties. My mother is 88.
I am 69. I suppose seventy is old. My body is starting to break down, but I don't feel old.
When my kids treat me like I am old I get angry. They often think they need to make my decisions for me. I remind them that I don't do that to my mother. I think she is nuts, but she functions. There are people in her neighborhood and her church who will let me know if she stops taking care of herself and her business. Thank God for that.

(54,440 posts)When I turned 21 in college, I had my official "Over-The-Hill" party, and decided that I was already officially "old," and anything after that was just gravy. Besides, that was 1973, and enough Americans were still coming home from Vietnam in body bags at age 19 and 20 to make us think that it was all relative. So, while I'm not 70 yet, it's looming on the horizon--IF I get there. Neither of my dad's parents did, so with my genes, from here on in, it's Beat The Reaper.
Old is what you think and feel--or maybe when you can no longer do either. I think worrying about it will get you there faster than anything else except maybe a lousy set of genes (got that covered) or a foolish diet (I try not to).
At the end of the day, I agree with Billy Joel's song "Vienna":
"But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old"

(6,129 posts)My aunt Rachel was in her 80's when we had my mother's 70th birthday party. Everybody was eating cake and telling stories when my aunt looked at me and said "Oh, to be 70 again". That put it all in perspective.
