New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the gunman suspected of attacking a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado resembled Batmans arch-villain The Joker at the time of the shocking attack.
We have some information, most of it is public. It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was The Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman, Kelly said at a news conference after noon.
Kelly said the NYPD is stepping up security at movie theaters around the city after suspect James Holmes walked into a Colorado movie theater during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises and opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring dozens more.

If this is true, it's incredibly disturbing, but I do have to ask how the NEW YORK police commissioner knowns so much about this crime and why would he be making statements about it?

(11,330 posts)in case of copycats, for example...which would be why NYPD would know something.
NYPD already said that they are going to have police presence at Batman showings this weekend.

(102,304 posts)My kneejerk reaction is that he is attention seeking in releasing that little tidbit, but hopefully that is not the case. Certainly he is appropriate in discussing how this affects precautions in NYC, but still.....
Still way too early to know motivations.

(11,366 posts)I realize that police might share that to brace for copycats, but for Kelly to arbitrarily release that info could be detrimental to any future case.

(129,168 posts)and I heard some showings were cancelled, but interesting about the info he is reporting.
Maybe they had a big conference call with a briefing spearheaded bt ATF/related Feds?
