(146,317 posts)about Women's Suffrage when I was about 12. She was born in the 19th century. I asked her about the first time she voted in an election. She said, "Just as soon as I could. A bunch of us went to the voting booth the very first election where we could. We went together. We had won."
My grandmother was a strong, very opinionated woman, I remember. Sadly, I didn't talk any more about that struggle with her. I don't know if she actively participated in the suffrage movement, but I did learn that she was very determined to vote at her first opportunity, and that her friends felt the same.
I talked to her about a lot of things from her history, and I'm very glad I did. I learned a great deal from her.

(146,317 posts)Raised in Texas in poverty, she was impatient, often grumpy, and had some ideas that were pretty antiquated. Most of the kids in my family didn't like her very much. She was stern and expected perfect behavior at all times, and was quick to get a switch out to correct any lapses.
However, I discovered that the way to deal with her was to ask her questions and let her become a story-teller and teacher. She was very good at it. In fact, she argued her way into being the very first woman reporter at the Phoenix Sun newspaper and taught herself photography in the process.
I asked her about a lot of things that related to her history and the times in which she lived. That would get her started and she could go on for just about ever with her stories. My sister and brother loved it, because that kept her from watching them like a hawk, ready to pounce.

We don't always realize what a treasure there is to be found in all their knowledge and life impressions.

(2,535 posts)writing her memories. It is also nice that her aunts had also written several memories.
I have been trying to gather pictures but from some it is like pulling teeth. I offer to scan them and leave them in the album plus have pictures sent to their children.
They just don't give a damn but many do.
