A gay man who was denied a marriage license by the former Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis may now be her challenger in next years election.
Davis is the county clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky, who gained international notoriety in August 2015 when she defied a U.S. federal court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples due to her Apostolic Pentecostal Christian faith. Her wilful defiance of the law resulted in her spending six days in jail for contempt of court.
This week Davis announced that she would run for re-election, this time as a Republican, the party she switched to after the controversy over her refusal to issue licenses for same-sex marriages erupted.
So far no Democrat has officially announced plans to run against her, but now David Ermold, an English professor who was denied a license by Davis to marry his same-sex fiance, is looking to jump into the race to prevent her re-election.
I am definitely going to keep an eye on this one. If he actually does run I will scrape together some $$ to send to his campaign!

(20,998 posts)...the unemployment line. She could have done her job AND still held true to her religious beliefs. She was in it for the publicity, the grandstanding and her "special moment." Fuck her. The good citizens of Rowan County need to elect someone that does the job they were elected to do and leaves their proselytizing at church, where it belongs.

She took pay for work she refused to do.

... Kentuckys Kim Davis .... the Rowan County Clerk, and Harry Mihet, the vice president of legal affairs and chief litigation counsel for Liberty Counsel, which once represented Davis, have been visiting Romania ...
Davis and Mihet .. have been .. meeting with religious leaders in the Orthodox Church, civic leaders, and members of Parliament, while giving TV and radio interviews aimed at spreading their message ... "Same-sex 'marriage' and freedom of conscience are mutually exclusive, because those who promote the former have zero tolerance for the latter" ...

(4,291 posts)As much as I want her to fade into oblivion, she will climb back up on her cross like a good little martyr, with full network coverage and wholeheartedly supported by wild-eyed-Sarahs daddy, Limpballs, (ins)Hannity, Bannon, Alex Jones and all the other prominent fundie/RWNJ celebs.
In true RepubliCON fashion, Prof. Ermold will be subject to the worst character assassination that those demons and their masters can wield. I hope this doesnt happen, but recent events would seem to indicate otherwise.

I truly hope that these guys go into this fight fully aware of what 💩 will likely be slung at them. And I applaud and commend them for their bravery.
But as a Kentucky expatriate, I know how nasty politics there can be.
Especially recently.
I truly regret how Louisvillian Mitch McConnell wormed his way into the Senate (he was a mediocre county-judge at best); he must have kissed significant ass to climb the political ladder, but his attack against his opponent Dee Huddleston went beyond the pale.
The fact that citizens of my former Commonwealth elected Rand Paul to the other Senate seat is not reassuring. And their current governor is equally abhorrent.
This is the environment into which he has plunged.
I wish him nothing but success. And would implore everyone here and especially those in that County to support his campaign. #GOTV
