We need a movement: State referenda to implement VOTER VERIFIED PAPER BALLOTING

Maine seriously energized me, and I think other states are going to be looking a the referendum process in a whole new way. We'll certainly see more Medicaid expansion referenda.

But I'd like to see the referendum process used for something critical to democracy: The implementation of VOTER VERIFIED PAPER BALLOTING in every state that has a referendum mechanism.

It's time.

It can be done.

determinedly,
Bright

The county Superintendents of Elections select, purchase, and maintain the methods and machines for voting. The state has some requirements that have to be met but the final choices are left to the local officials.

This means that in order to make changes in your community, you have to work with the local superintendent. In our county, local offices are supposed to be "non-partisan" which seems to be a way for Republicans to get a toe hold in a strong Democratic area. On the other hand, that means they are not supposed to demonstrate a strong party bias which is what you want in an elections officer.

Start by contacting your local election offices and find out who selects the voting method. Then do your research and start advocating with that person for your preferred method.

..ballots. No voting machines where we were. before the mail in..I used to count the ballots! 4 of us..2 Ds and 2 Rs locked in the back room of the voting station and one pair (d and r) would read off the ballot (one read-one verify) and the other team of 1 D and 1 R..would tally the results on paper using the IIIII/ method. When we reached 10 we would verify we had each reached the number before crossing out the hashtags. Our counted ballots and results were put into a box that we locked and included our signatures on the final tally. A ballot runner would drive it to the court house where they were getting in all the counted ballots. We had the results from all over the state by that evening ( maybe late).

Anyway...now the mail in ballots are taken out of the envelopes and run thru a scanner. I was a 'poll watcher' at the court house where the paper ballots are unpacked and counted.

SO SIMPLE! No lines, no waiting..or driving... in cold weather to vote.
So either mail in or plain paper ballots-its pretty dummy proof. In fact theres a code you can type in that allows you to verify your mail-in ballot arrived at the court house.
