Even evil people can read polls. It could just as easily be that they wrote off the VA and NJ statehouses as lost causes months ago, just as the Republican leadership did with the White House in 2008.

They are no doubt planning on recouping their losses elsewhere next year, much like the Republicans planned 2010 and Citizens United even as we celebrated election night in 2008.
