(9,736 posts)Georgia had never elected a Republican U.S. Senator, and until the election of Sonny Perdue in 2002, Georgia had never elected a Republican Governor. The state legislature was solidly Democratic until 2002, also. It's something non-Georgians never think about, but Georgia, under a steady stream of Democratic governors and lieutenant governors, was far and away the most progressive state of the old Confederacy. It has since gone straight to hell, but maybe it's finally coming to its senses. I sincerely hope so.
