That's what happened. It will continue as long as Trump remains unpopular with independents.
All the stuff about united party and turnout and paper ballots is swell wanna-believe but misses the big picture

I would have turned out if Sec. Clinton were in the White House. Trump just increased my angst about the election. I did contribute slightly more to candidates.
Some Democrats I know miss midterm elections often. This time they didn't and this helped.
That said, without those who identify as independents, we could not win.
