If you're a psychopath looking to kill a huge number of people, a movie premier is the perfect place to do it. It was a huge premier and was probably picked for that very reason - as well as having the ability to dress up as a certain character and get in with as many guns and what not as he had without being detected.

Gunman released canister then opened fired. Only know of one gunman. No evidence of additional shooters. Officers responded and found the gunman in the back of the theater in a car. In possession of a gasmask and guns.
