I like Painer. Something is going to have to happen with Sessions and his lying. But what that something is --is a mystery at the moment.
Richard W. Painter? @RWPUSA
The fix is in. They set up Sessions to take the fall. After he is gone, a new acting AG fires Mueller.

Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to President Trumps campaign, told House investigators that he told Attorney General Jeff Sessions about his trip to Russia during the campaign, according to a new report.
CNN reports that Page testified that he told Sessions about his trip to Russia, which happened in July 2016.
"Back in June 2016, I mentioned in passing that I happened to be planning to give a speech at a university in Moscow," Page told CNN. "Completely unrelated to my limited volunteer role with the campaign and as I've done dozens of times throughout my life.
Understandably, it was as irrelevant then as it is now. If it weren't for the dodgy dossier and all the chaos that those complete lies had created, my passing comment's complete lack of relevance should go without saying, he continued.
A source told CNN that Page told Sessions about the trip at a dinner in June 2016. The dinner was attended by several members of Trumps national security team, according to CNN.
In testimony before the Senate in June, Sessions said he did not recall any meetings between campaign associates and Russian officials. Page was one of the officials Sessions was asked about.
While he said he knew of no meetings between Page and Russians, he added, There might be some published accounts of Mr. Page communicating with Russians, I dont know."

(40,212 posts)I think that it would cause an avalanche that would bring an end to the Trump presidency. It is too late for Trump. The American people will not stand for it. They will not stand for Trump appointing a new AG, who would need to get pass the U.S. Senate, for the purpose of firing Mueller. Americans aren't going to wake up the next morning and say "oh, that's fine. We will just forget about all this Russia business...." No. That isn't going to happen. We are all in too deep.

(49,000 posts)Getting rid of Sessions doesn't do anything to help Trump with other problems, like Don Jr's Trump Tower meeting with Russians.
As for whether Trump would like someone else as AG who would fire Mueller -- sure, I agree with that.
But according to what I've read, most people around Trump have been advising him that firing Mueller would be politically disastrous.
I think they're more likely to try to use Congress to slash Mueller's funding.
And they might try to start an investigation of Hillary, especially re the uranium deal, in the hope that would tarnish Mueller, Comey and Rosenstein. But I'd guess the wiser heads at the DOJ know that won't work, no matter how much it appeals to nitwits like Bannon and Trump.

I suppose Trump could fire Rosenstein then but who's going to take over and fire Mueller?
It would be a quick path to prison

(12,344 posts)Can't fire Mueller. If he does, Mueller will go to court to get his job back, and win.

The Republicans know he will be indicted and he's all out of cookies. So they are spinning his departure as a failed AG who was invisible and failed to lock her up.
The effort to spin Jeff's demise goes all the way to the top of the food chain. Trump himself wants to make sure this isn't seen as another #TrumpRussia defeat.

This is not about firing Mueller, it is about controlling the narrative as another lying criminal has to leave the stage.
