Trump wanted in the Russian market so badly he put Manafort in charge to provide all the back channels needed to move forward. Then he brought in Mercer's team Bannon/Conway to feed the data/targeting info to the Russian trolls. Not sure Dotard really wanted anything more that Vlad's approval, but their combined techniques got them close enough with Comey's help to steal or suppress the few votes needed in the right states to finesse the EC count.
