The Miami-Dade County Democratic Party will stop campaigning for a Miami Beach City Commission candidate accused of recently exposing himself to a Democratic congressional candidate.
Chairman Juan Cuba told the Miami Herald on Monday the party will cancel digital ads and mailed fliers for Rafael Velasquez, who is on next week's nonpartisan Beach ballot and denies the accusation by Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez.
“I am suspending the party's efforts in this race,” Cuba said. “As a society, we have done a poor job believing women who come forward. In this case, it's a Democratic commissioner and congressional candidate. Until I understand fully what's going on, I believe this is the best course for the party to take.”
Cuba had not yet spoken to Velasquez or to Rosen Gonzalez, who is running in 2018 for Congressional District 27, one of national Democrats' best opportunities to pick up a House seat following the retirement of Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
As first reported by Politico Florida, Rosen Gonzalez said Velasquez pulled out his penis in her car after the two had dinner on Oct. 18. She had endorsed him in the Group 2 race, and urged the party, labor unions, donors and voters to support him.
