(86,647 posts)the laws of each individual country... dual citizens might be holding more than one passport. I know that you can't hold dual citizenship if one of the countries is Germany and the other the US... but Canadians can and so can folks from Croatia. I do know that, which leads me to suspect that they could have more than one passport, but I could be wrong about that.

(7,525 posts)Based on what I read from Wikipedia, Germany allows dual citizenship if the secondary citizenship is with Switzerland or a country who is in the European Union. Germany also allows dual citizenship if the secondary citizenship was automatically granted at birth. Citizens of Germany can also ask for permission to acquire a second citizenship.
The United States, on the other hand, really doesn't care if it's citizens have citizenship elsewhere. The only thing that would get them in trouble is if they served in the armed forces of a hostile power or performed some other treasonous act.
Anyways, your sons probably fall into the category of being awarded citizenship of both countries at birth. I'm less certain how you gained dual citizenship.

(36,444 posts)He has two New Zealand passports, plus an Australian and British passport - all valid. He weaseled the two Kiwi passports (his home country) because he does business in countries that would have a shit-fit if they saw some of the stamps from some of the countries he has visited. In suspect Manford may be playing the same game.

(7,633 posts)If you are traveling for work in sensitive countries, you are allowed to get a second passport that is being used for these travels. This is so that stamps dont show up in your regular passport in case it is a security risk.
Other reasons include that you have visas in one passport that are still valid and you can not send your passport in to apply for another visa from another country (which sometimes takes weeks) because you are constantly traveling.
I have never heard of having three unless of course, its from other countries .
From the state department website:
Most commonly, a second US passport is issued because a traveler needs to travel frequently and may not have time to apply for the required visas between trips outside of the United States. For example, if a US citizen has a visa pending and requires a second passport, the US Department of State may issue a second passport. As well, if you are traveling to a country which needs to hold on to your passport while processing your visa, you may be able to get a second passport so that you can continue to travel while your visa is pending.
In some cases, a second US passport is issued when a traveler is traveling between politically conflicted countries. In this case, a second passport acts as added security and allows US citizens freedom of travel. For example, if a traveler is traveling to Israel and then to a country which does not allow travelers from Israel to enter, the Department of State will sometimes issue such a traveler a second passport so that the US citizen can travel freely to both countries.

(37,451 posts)Judge orders house arrest for Manafort and Gates
From CNN's Katelyn Polantz
A federal judge today granted both government requests and ordered home confinement for Paul Manafort and Rick Gates. The judge set bond at $10 million for Manafort and $5 million for Gates. They did not have to put collateral behind that amount, and will not have to pay it unless they violate the court's directions.
The house arrest request came because the government stressed be "nature of the charges and their seriousness." Manafort would be a risk of flight because he faces 151 to 181 months in prison, and alleged fraud in his charges. Gates faces 121 to 151 months in prison. Both lost their passports.
The defendants will have to check in daily with law enforcement by phone, and will only be allowed to leave their homes for see their attorneys, appear at court, or for medical and religious necessities.

(20,202 posts)You can have 2 US passports if you travel to countries that are adversaries. For example, if you travel to Israel, you'll need another passport to travel to some Muslim countries, like Iran. But I can't imagine why you would need more than 2 US passports. It said he's also applied for even more.

(4,993 posts)I had 2 passports because I was travelling extensively and ended up with no more room for stamps and had to get another one.
I don't recall if it was the same number or not.
