(37,648 posts)If Franken was talking about Sessions lying about meeting Russians, it's true he lied. But I watched the first one or two hearings, & Sessions was reminded & then "remembered" that he was at the campaign rally and the Russian guy was there. Well, that's not a "meeting," which is what the question was. He's there, Sessions is there... so I doubt they could get him charged and convicted on lying for that.
I think Franken was speaking of something else related to another hearing I didn't see, though.
As far as I know, there was no formal "meeting" between Sessions and the Russians. It's possible I missed something, tho.
lagomorph777
(30,613 posts)"...news outlets reported that his discussions with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the presidential election included campaign-related issueswhich, if true, would contradict what Sessions has previously told the Senate...Sessions spokesperson statement in response to those news stories does not specifically deny the accuracy of those reports (see below)...Lying to Congress is a felony, and special counsel Robert Mueller may have jurisdiction here since these statements materially relate to the investigation of Trump campaign relationships with Russia."
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)about the Kislyak discussions. You see how that works? You are making assumptions on things you want to believe. But I'm looking at the facts: There is no evidence that Sessions was present at any time while Kislyak was discussing the campaign with members of the Trump campaign. What we know is that Kislyak was at a rally, and Sessions was there, too. They saw each other and conversed a bit, but there is no evidence there was a "meeting," or that Sessions had a discussion or campaign discussion with him. But they might. There would be nothing wrong with that, depending on the substance.
Sessions is not in legal trouble, as far as I know. Even if he lied on a point that is unrelated to conspiracy charges.

(37,648 posts)The excerpt is:
If there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?
Senator Franken, Im not aware of any of those activities, Sessions responded. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didnt have did not have communications with the Russians, and Im unable to comment on it.
The highlighted statement is the only provable lie that I have seen and that is relevant to the investigation key points. Ruh-roh. I'd say that deer in the headlights look on Sessions' face lately is there for a reason.
Except that I don't know of a statement by Papadopoulos where he says Sessions was at such a meeting. I'm taking the word of the author of that article.
BUT...almost no one is charged w/perjury when testifying before Congress. It's very difficult to prove. I wonder if the Special Counsel's office has interviewed Sessions. If Sessions lies to them, he could be in serious trouble. (Then again...the Deputy AG appointed the Special Counsel, so how does that affect things?)

As it is, they have all sorts of money laundering/financial irregularities that are probably far more complex than Flynn's or Manafort's - mainly because they not only had their own interests but acted on behalf of their father for his stuff. If anything, NY AG Schneiderman could take them down, and no pardon can happen in that case.

Mike Flynn indicted for failing to register under FARA, the Foreign Agents Registration Act, as an agent of Turkey whilst National Security Advisor
While we are able to report that Special Counsel Mueller is holding dozens of sealed indictments, many of which were returned while James Comey was Director of the FBI, we cannot report with specificity who is indicted on what charge other than the two above, because sources were not specific. We have reported on the investigations suspects are facing, and these are listed below.
Listed as under investigation with lots of specifics as to areas:
Mike Pence
Paul Ryan
Rex Tillerson
Steve Mnuchin
Mike Flynn
Mike Flynn Jr
Donald J Trump Jr
Eric Trump
(These are not intended to be exclusionary. We are aware of other offenses the Trump sons and their father are being investigated for and are withholding reporting at the request of sources).
Ivanka Trump
Brad Parscale, Jared Kushner, Pyotr Levashov, Michael Cohen and Boris Epshteyn (among several others)
Michael Cohen

(60,010 posts)If you recall, the mogul Jeffery Einstein (?) had a party yacht, with his "friends", and underage teen "models".

(27,849 posts)and a convicted pedophile.
He threw many "Lolita" parties, some on his yacht, and some at his NYC town house.
Trump is alleged to have attended at least 4 "Lolita" parties at Epstein's New York City home.
At one of those parties back in the early 1990s, Trump allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl, who filed a written deposition, in federal court, under oath, about the incident.
Another young woman, who worked for Epstein, said in a deposition, under oath, that she witnessed the rape of the 13-year-old girl.
(The Statute of Limitations was waved in this case because it was a rape case)
If what these two women testified to is false, they are subject to a 5-year prison sentence, as well as a huge fine.
If what these two women testified to is false, then why hasn't Trump told his lawyers to sue them both for slander?
(The rape victim was supposed to "reveal her true identity" at a press conference at her lawyer Lisa Bloom's SoCal office last September, but after receiving death threats, the press conference was canceled)
More on the rape in the victim's own words:

(27,849 posts)I've spent the past 2 hours doing Google searches on Louise Mensch, the founder of the Patribiotics blog.
She certainly is no "progressive"..that's for sure.
In fact, she is a former Conservative member of the British Parliament, and, after marrying American music manager Peter Mensch, in 2011, she moved to the USA in 2012 and became a Republican.
In April of last year, she co-founded Heet Street, a news, opinion and commentary website which has been described as "center-right and libertarian."
She also co-founded the Hudson Union Society, "a members-only institution based in New York City that runs weekly celebrity showcases."
Some of the speakers Hudson Union has hosted include:
- Bill O'Reilly
- Sean Hannity
- Donald Rumsfeld
- Meg Whitman, CEO of Hewlett-Packard (HP)
- Madeleine Allbright
(Hudson Union has also hosted less conservative celebrities such as Al Gore & Jon Stewart)
"Mensch claims she has evidence that Vladimir Putin had Andrew Breitbart murdered to make room for Steve Bannon at Breitbart."...but I could find no evidence that would indicate his death was anything but what the Los Angeles Coroner's Office said..namely,that he died of a heart attack.
The toxicology report showed:
"No prescription or illicit drugs were detected...The blood alcohol (level) was .04%.
No significant trauma was present and foul play is not suspected."
One of his close friends said that "He worked himself to death."
Only two right-wing UK newspapers, The Independent, and The Daily Caller, ran articles suggesting that his death was suspicious.
This bothers me, because if Louise Mensch "has evidence that Vladimir Putin had Andrew Breitbart murdered"...then where is it?
Why didn't she turn over the "evidence" to the Los Angeles Police Department?
So, I'm taking all of what you've posted from Patribiotics with a grain of salt.
I'm not saying that what she claims about the Trump/Russia collusion is absolutely false; but her "unnamed sources" can't be verified, can they?
"The Republican Party is a body under investigation for RICO for accepting Russian money."?
That would be great!....but only if it's true.

(27,849 posts)Part of my reason for questioning Mensch's authenticity is her statement that she
"has evidence that Putin had Andrew Breitbart killed so that Steve Bannon could take over Breitbart"
I argued that only a couple of right-wing UK newspapers shared her opinion that Breitbart was murdered; but after thinking about it last night, I now suspect that she may be right about his death being a murder ordered by Putin.
His blood alcohol level was .04, which is pretty high, and I remembered that one or two other former Putin allies were poisoned (in London, I think) with a radioactive element that only showed up in toxicology tests because the coroner tested for them.
In Los Angeles, where Andrew Breitbart died, it's very doubtful if the coroner there tested for radioactive elements which could have caused death, so the LA toxicology tests showed
"no illicit substances".
But Breitbart, like the other two Putin victims in London, had been drinking alcohol before he died, and not just one or two glasses of wine or beer either.
A .04 alcohol level means that he probably had several drinks, and they may have been spiked with that radioactive element that Putin used to kill the other two in London.
So Mensch may be right about her assertion that Putin had Andrew Breitbart killed.

Seems reasonable. It also occurs to me that, with seemingly all of their lawyers being dirty, too, a lot of the stuff that would normally be privileged is fair game.

(20,730 posts)The Republican Party as a body is under investigation for RICO for accepting Russian money. The GOP itself is being considered to be a corrupt organization under the RICO statutes. Sources were firm that the GOP, as it is presently known, may no longer exist after this investigation and a new party of the right may have to form. Sources did not say if charges or indictments had been returned against the party however.
I haven't the foggiest idea how we'd run the country with one half of the legislators compromised by a foreign government: We'd have to have emrgancy appointments and then emergency elections.
