What’s in Romney’s Unreleased Tax Returns: He Overpaid His Taxes by Erick Erickson

snip (from Redstate)

So what about the years before 2009? We know he turned over more than two decades of returns to the McCain campaign during the veepstakes vetting process. What was in them? “Mitt’s taxes were complex, but clean. He overpaid his taxes.

An honest appraisal would find nothing to criticize, though Romney’s staff, for better or worse, doesn’t seem to trust the returns to be honestly appraised by the media,” says a source closely familiar with the 2008 vetting process.

He's on tape saying he didn't pay a dollar more than he should. If he did overpay, bully for him! But why lie?

In the face of such arguments, Romney’s defense is that he never broke the rules: if there is a problem, it is in the laws, not in his behavior. “I pay all the taxes that are legally required, not a dollar more,” he said. Even so. “When you are running for president, you might want to err on the side of overpaying your taxes, and not chase every tax gimmick that comes down the pike,” says (Lee) Sheppard (of Tax Notes). “It kind of looks tacky.”

Stop helping, Erick Erickson!

If he overpaid he would have released them during the primaries.

Mark my words. He's going to get away with it unless more is looked into between his SEC filings, and his time as Gov of Mass. We may as well put the tax issue behind us. This is going to be the new norm for the GOP unless they change requirements for running for President.

"We may as well put the tax issue behind us"

Thanks, but no thanks. Romney and the GOP are going to wish they were still playing with friendly fire in the Primaries.

We didn't really think that the mega millionaires who run and perform on the tv news would actually NOT support a wall street insider?

Mitt is not qualified to be president. He is not qualified to be an American, frankly... he should go live in Bermuda with his money. But.. he promises great riches to the upper crust who work at the networks.

And he's too embarrassed for his team of CPAs and tax attorneys to call attention to it.

Actually, this would prove he used many, many deductions to lower the amount he needed to pay, which would insure a big refund.

I'm sure he probably did "overpay" cause he has to pay taxes quarterly on self employment income, which at that point was probably a large portion of his income. Then at the end of the year, he used all these fancy tax tricks (that only rich people can use for some reason) to lower the amount he owed to the govt, and then he probably got a big refund.

Same thing with a refund - overpaying really has nothing to do with your tax rate and what you owe.

"What’s in Romney’s Unreleased Tax Returns: He Overpaid His Taxes by Erick Erickson"

...so he's saying Mitt is a moron?

I mean, only a moron would allow himself to be criticized for tax dodging and paying a too small percentage of his income in taxes when all he had to do is release his returns and prove he "overpaid."
