A memo written by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, released among 2,800 declassified records relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, has shown how in the days after Lee Harvey Oswald was shot, the FBI planned to convince the public that he was the real assassin as soon as possible.
In the document, dictated shortly after Oswald was shot by Dallas nightclub owner Leon Ruby, Hoover explains how both he and then-Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach were concerned that Oswald should be established as the presidents killer as a matter of urgency.

The former FBI director went on to explain that establishing which facts could and could not be made public was important because of the possible foreign policy implications. There are several aspects which would complicate our foreign relations, Hoover says in the memo.

The Hoover memo also complains about the amount of information about the shooting being made available to the press through Dallas police. We want them to shut up, Hoover said.

(12,447 posts)Hoover was a pathological sort.
All the forensic evidence bears that out, too.
All of it!
So-called magic bullets notwithstanding. There were no magic bullets.

(12,858 posts)IIRC Rex Stout wrote a mystery in which Wolfe took on Hoover. Lots of corruption, evil machinations by Hoover.

(4,787 posts)one of the latter stories, published in 1965.
An actual contemporary book, The FBI Nobody Knows, a critique/expose written by journalist Fred J. Cook, kicks off the story. A wealthy woman - who liked the book so much that she bought/sent out 10,000 copies of it to various and sundry folks - believes that she is being watched/harassed by the Feds as a result, and hires Wolfe to stop them.
That book reference got Stout put on an FBI 'list', because J. Edgar quite disliked Cook's work.
