The former “Forrest Park”, now “Health Sciences Park” sits adjacent to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, home of the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, etc for the state...also my alma mater . I used to park next to and walk through that park nearly every day during my time there. Like most Confederate “monuments”, this one was built during the Jim Crow era in the early 1900’s but with a twist, Forrest and his wife’s remains were moved from a city cemetery to this site under the monument. Because the monument is essentially a grave marker, it has caused extra consternation over the years for the city and its attempts to rename the park.

This is a huge win for the city of Memphis. Hopefully one day the monument will come down or be moved and the remains of Forrest and his wife will be returned to their original burial places.
